Hey guys again,
Well with the purchase of my new deck (Alpine 9855r), ive been running im fronts active, and wow, it has such an improvment over the stock passive crossovers. Its really brought these cheap speakers to life (clarion SRS1685).
However, i only bought these speakers to tie me over untill i saved up more to get some decent speakers.
What im after is some pictures of tweeters mounted in the kicks of third gens. What is the best way of going about this ?
Cheers
Rob

I remember reading your thread, and looking at all your pics on MEA. Perhaps you could post those step by step pictures for everyone on Aussie Magna :D

CDM 54 and Supremo in tubes. Actually prob one of the best staging setups i ever had. Midranges were totally sealed in the right enclosure.

Oh my tim. What havnt you done, lol
Thats given me some ideas for my upcoming new two ways.
However, whats the best way to mount the tweeters. The swivel arms look like a good idea, how did they sound ?

Yeah I used many things, what you wanna do is get them sounding good before you commit to their location and install. Sit your speakers on pillows/use blutac/use aluminium strapping, or iron strapping as its a bit more rigid - can buy from bunnings.
Once you've figgured it out its a case of fibreglassing, something for them, or cutting a hole somewhere, although im not a fan of cutting stuff, u should be able to turn most installs back to stock without any dramas.
Swivel arm was years ago... to be honest I cant remember how it sounded, its progressed since then

Be warned I recently read an article on kick panel tweeters and the author brought up a valid point.
Most people doing this saw cars with tweeters in kicks from America where the accelerator isnt next to the tweeter hence your leg isnt in the way.
I tried it and found the sound stage was much better (higher) with the tweeters angled towards the opposite headrest from the corners of the dash.
I am keen to hear other people experiences but personally I wont be going there.

The dash is great for height, but shocking for path length difference. The only reason we use the kicks is to get the tweets as far away as possible. By doing this the difference in distance between each tweeter and the listener is reduced. The closer these get to equidistant the beter the stereo effect will be and the less you need to rely on time alignment and balance.
There is heaps of room in the magna kicks, and the aim is not to hide the tweets behind the drivers foot, you still want line of sight, and this is possible.
height is just one aspect. for good realism you also want
Depth (how far away the stage is from the listener, i.e. at the steering wheel, on the dash, past the windscreen.)
Dependent on the car kick panels are usually the best for this as they get the speakers as far away as possible. Depth and imaging will be further away from the listener which is always a good thing. The worst thing for depth is using rear speakers as the stage drags to an equal level with the driver or goes behind the driver; this means its not staging at all as you can't pinpoint anything, or visualise a stage.
Width How wide the stage is, i.e. a singer at far left is coming from the a-pillar, outside the a-pillar/inside the a-pillar. Again depending on the car, it is easy to get a wide stage from dash mounted tweets, but you will get drivers side bias. This can be overcome with changes to balance and time alignment but this will usually throw out the passengers stage.
and
Height How high the stage is, does it taper off at the edges? (rainbow effect) aim for head height although if not done right kick panel mounts can drop to the floor. although with a bit of tweaking with angles it's as if they were on the dash.
it is usually much easier to get a stronger centre focus with kick mounted tweeters which is hard with dash mounted.
No hard and fast rules with anything though. Some cars have the dash further from the listener than any practical location in the kicks.
Cant say that I've seen many bad info from kick mounted speakers after people have attempted it. I also used to assume the dash was the best spot, wasnt until I heard differently that I changed my mind, but each to their own.
Another issue with dash mounted tweets is reflections of glass which can cause comb filtering, and an overly bright/harsh tweeter.
it also effects your staging as you hear the incident then reflected wave. Lots of strange things happen there at high frequencies with phase which all adds more mess.
Peace
Tim

I have my tweeters mounted in the kick panels (see earlier post) and the tweeters are extremely harsh. I am not sure whether it is because they are focals (metal dome) or positioned incorrectly or turned up too high.
Is there any way of turning down the tweeters, if not, then what other options would people suggest to fix this?
Also the sound stage seems to be more to the left (passenger side), so i have had to fade the speakers to the left, not sure if this is to do with my feet blocking the right tweeters or not, as sam350 was suggesting?
Any suggestions or help would be appreciated?

Hi tim,
i agree with you on most things except I am much happier with them on the dash facing opposite seats as FHRX has done in his SQ competition car.
i have also had trouble with legs moving and blocking line of sight which effectively cancels any balance, depth and width.
i think left hand drives are better suited with having their right foot forward.
