You'll need both...
Honestly mate unless you got a spare 20 ish hours up your sleeve better off getting mine on ebay and quickly touching it up.
1) Get a TS Grille - $40
2) Bog - $13 Min
3) Fibreglass bog - $18
4) Primer - $10
5) Paint - $10
6) Clear - $10
7) Sandpaper - $5-$10 depends
8) Mesh - $30
Total - $141
Mine on Ebay, Think its $75 Buy It now
Ive got tons of bog here so i can even fill the holes again or you can get some blade putty to fill them up. The cracks are minimal so you cant even see them anyway
Once you chop the slats out of the TS grille, you have the fun task of filling them up, and its not just a quick bog job. you have all 4 sides to fill up, much harder then a TH grille which is up top and bottom.
You will need some sort of "base" under the big chunks in the grille missing. So for this use plastic or whatever and stick it under the big holes using the fibreglass filler, once thats dry, time to bog, and sand, and bog, and sand, and bog, and sand, and bog, and sand, and bog, and sand, and bog, and sand, and bog, and sand:D
Once thats done time for primer, once you find out what flaws are in the grille, time for more bogging and sanding.
etc etc etc etc just talk to me ive done it many times

Okay, i've alread cut the slats out of a spare TR grille i had lying around.
so...what i've got:
1) Grille with slats removed
2) Primer
3) Paint
4) Clear
5) Sandpaper
6) Body filler
so really, the only thing im missing is fibreglass bog and mesh yes?

Im teling you now, You cannot make a TR Grille Letterbox.
You will have to make a frame for it from behind, which is a big task in itself.
Only thing you can do with a TR Grille is take the slats off and mesh it from behind.
If you check out a TS Grille, you will find its got about 1"+ Of well dish in it already so all you gotta do is take out the crap in the middle
And if its not going to be deep its not going to be very letterbox either:P
BUTTTT if you wanna work on a TR Grille do so:P
if you wanted things to do one your holidays i got a few for ya
i.e. paint your interior and make some door trims for it?:P

All TS Grilles are the same
theres only 4 grilles made and that was one for each model
TR (What you have), TS (What you want), KR (Dead friggin ugly), And KS (Best option IMHO)
You can get leather from a 2nd or 3rd gen in black or Grey for about $300-$600 Thats the easier / cheaper option.
And if your keen, you can do the interior pieces in suede too, its been done mate
Other option is buy my damn grille :P:)

I did too, but was more of a challenge making one, and personally i had never seen one before, so i thought id be unqiue and try it out!
it definatly looked different, but would look a hell of a lot better on a lighter color car as on a darker color car it just looked like a TS grille.

Agreed... the effort taken to make them is worth it somewhat, although I went and kept my modified TR grille, it's sexy, so neat and tidy, I love it.
