View Full Version : Auto Trans Failsafe
Wondering if any one knows of possible causes that might cause the trans of TJ Sports Trip. to go in to failsafe mode. It doesn't happen all the time. It seems only when sitting on a constant speed for a period of time such as on the freeway.
Goes back to normal after stopping turning ignition off then restarting some times straight away other times about 5 to 10 mins

Hmm, have a sparky check out the electricals. I once had a problem with my KS where the
auto trans would go into failsafe mode for no reason. Eventually my TCU died and was
replaced. However, it was still going into failsafe mode once in a while. Until the alternator
died and was replaced with a new one. Since then, the trans stopped going into failsafe
mode. The sparky told me that the alternator was spiking the TCU causing it to go into fail
safe mode. I told my local Mitsu dealer about it and they never heard of it, but something
to remember.

Get your voltage regulator looked at. My brother's KE was playing up to no end, having the same problem you are. It turned out that the voltage regulator was throwing out different voltages every startup, which occasionally tripped the TCU into failsafe.

even check the color of the fluid. My dads verada did similar before it died completely. When the oil is hot and the clutch packs worn(we found out later) it went into failsafe mode. the oil ended black.
Thank you for your replies.
I am convinced that is an electrical problem. As I have had the fluid changed about 3500km ago. The voltage regulator sounds like a good place to start. Where is it located ? and is it a serviceable part ?

Yes! It's located on the alternator (you should see a plug plugged into it). You can replace the brushes inside, but if it's overpowering the TCU i'm not sure what would cause this.

It's on the alternator, and from what I understand (I've only just gotten a 3rd Gen myself) it's quite easy to get to.
