Anyone had experience reconditioning them? Sounds like my bearings are gone, I'm getting a whine and it changes note when you switch the AC on.

Was wondering if anyone knew a rough price for new bearings etc? Or if its cheaper to get a new unit? Was speaking to a mate who's a mech and he thinks off memory it was a pretty expensive exercise to put new bearings in?

Any info much appriciated.

All I can say is that if your geting a new one put in is talk to every mechanic in the phone book. A bloke I work with (Brendan) spoke to three mechanics for a price on getting a new compresor fited to his TH and all three came back with around $1500 fitted. Mentioned this to another guy at work (Rob) who is a drag nut, he said to call this mechanic he met at willowbank one night. Called him up, $700 fitted!! That was before he even mentioned that he knew Rob. When he did, the bloke said to bring it round at lunch that day, had it back before we left work at 5pm.

Speaking from unfortunate experience, I had to settle for reco units (amateur experience that is) as new was not offered in this case a telstar tx5 1990 model. In the past two occassions, they worked great for 2+ years and after that, seal failure of course and back to square one, hence the purchase of a magna just recently and joining this forum of course.

From the above, I learn't that it is easier to try and find someone in the know for price and advice and fit a new possible frame and/or mod the frame. This could be difficult but worth a serious try. My other car the discovery I ended up cutting and welding for a couple of frame mods and converted a frame to fit a bosch alt from lucas. Saving of 400 and new purchase of course rather than reco genuine so air con is no different as I believe compressors are just measured in flow etc.

So, you may end up with another option before you hit those reco units at 1500 and if not then you gave it a good go.
