Well mate.. You either haven't got enough ventilation for it
OR..

You might be running it at 2ohm.. when the amp isnt 2ohm stable! Don't know too much about JL Amps etc. but, it should be 2ohm stable as its a JL.. but, who knows.. Where's Manual when you need him?!

SuFz

Does the amp have a Fan built in? some Amp's these days do. Check if it has one and if it does is it still working/Not blocked by the way its mounted. If it is ****ed you can allot of times use Computer cooling fans as they too are 12 Volt to fix the problem...

well your probably right about the whole ventilation thing seeing as though my car is back/green and JB hi-fi put my amp accross the bloody port hole. they even told me they needed my car for two days to make a 'special' bracket to fix the amp to. i just took a good look at it this morning after finding that it over heats and they've just put self tappers into the back of the seats. not a happy chappy. anyway it sound like a fan turns on when i power it but if there is its awfull quiet.

yeah, i'd definately have a good look at the power/ohm rating of the amp, and make sure the speakers connected to it arent too far off aswell, at least it is turning off, so i guess its not going to get damaged as much as it would if it did over-overheat

I had this problem, turned out it was a Bad earth on the amp. ;)

i checked all the conections (pissed i paid someone to do it now) and they are all fine. i checked the power rating, iscool. so i figure that, seeing as though the yoobo's who installed my amp put it accross the port hole, i can open the hatch and blast the air con straight at it. sounds good for summer.

i had this problem when i first got my amp, and it wasn't mounted. I just had it lying on the carpet in the boot, and it would over heat. I put it on a piece of wood, and the problem has gone. the amp sits up off the wood a tiny bit to allow airflow all around it.....hasnt turned off once since.

As a dealer of JL's I can tell you it's rare to have one shut down due to loading at 2ohms.

I suspect it might be the mounting. How much air does it get dude?

fresh air?? :?

it sits accross a port hole in the rear seat.

Given that the steel that the amplifyer is mounted to is insulated by the back seat, it'll probably retain a lot of heat. Adding a spacer under the amp as Samurai suggests is probably going to help a lot.

allright guys its really getting to me now! i thought i had it sused but the damn thing is still switching off (my amp that is). thanks for the advice about spacing the amp but given that the amp is mounted across the port hole i cant see it making a hole lot of diffence. it switched off right as i pulled up at home today and the bastard is at boiling point. is this normal for a boot mounted amp to be so damn hot? also wondering if something like this sould be covered warrenty? thanks again so much for the advice :)

mounting it over the port hole? doesnt that kind of defeat the purpose of having a port.....also the air in the box isnt exactly going to be cool....subbies get hot too, and if the air gettin sucked back into the box is passing over the amp, then its likely that its hot too.......maybe u should mount your amp somewhere else....you havent mounted it upside down have you?
It is normal for amps to get so hot, i doubt there's anything wrong with it, try mounting it where it has plenty of air around it.

man you trippin. i meant the hole in the back seats thats ports through to the boot. anyhow its copping tones of air flow with the center air con duct pointed straight at it. does it matter if it's mounted on the side?
