just like the title says, i was wondering how many first gen members there are left that still come on every once and a while. when i first joined there where atleast 20-30 regulars, whereas now there seems to only be about 10. I guess there becoming a dying breed:D

well atleast there a few left. Guess i don't feel so alone now haha. just wish there was another member up here that is into them as well.
soon my tp will be getting a face lift:D i've got new paint there ,plus an elante kit which im in the middle molding it to my spare bumper and moddifying alittle. plus things like new tail lights and garnish . but im not gonna say what im doing yet (don't wanna let the cat out of the bag) but the paint i will be doing will be a bit different. well i haven't seen another 1st gen painted the same way. Don't worry when it's done i'll post progress pics:D gotta tint it at the same time other wise the paint will look alittle out of place. So after i move house in 2 months i'll be pulling some all nighters to get it done seeing as it's the day to day car. well unless i get the honda prelude 3g i got cheap back on the road then the magna will happen faster , but i'll see how i go.

Yeah my clock and cruise control doesn't work but i just bought one of those cheapy digi clocks and stuck it on the dash works good.
If the car was auto i wouldn't mind cruise but you dont buy manual to kick back and relax :p
Would be good to see your car done. I want to get a new paint job, tints and some rims on mine but other things keep coming up, money gets spent and **** happens :(

Still here also...
Looking seriously at taking the TP off the road and getting it back into rather decent shape... Perhaps convert it to manual (and tech Miss 13 to drive one, so she doesn't need to wreck the Tarago :p)... replace the timing chains, etc, fit TR top end stuff, and tidy up a few body imperfections. Probably will lower it also, and re-tint the windows.
Then I guess I'll finally start looking for a 3rd gen... But still leaves me as a gen 1'er for a year or 3 ;-)
Cheers,
Mattt.

Nah - had always wanted a decent 1st gen, hence doing this stuff to the TP... However have *loved* the shape and styling of the 3rd ever since it's inception... aside from the high doors (like, where you rest your elbow while your driving) :-)

I'm still here. Have had 1st Gens continuously since 1987. Is that a record? Had the first one for 17 years. Currently have 2 TPs. Must be catching the Carcycle disease as I'm looking at another one (Elite wagon).

I've been meaning to post some pics of my car as soon as I wash it... I just haven't washed it since I joined last year, or since about 2003 for that matter.
Will get round to it soon.

Hi Guys,
i'm new here also just joined last week. My wife and I recently bought a 1987 TM Magna Executive. its a nice car in reasonable shape but we are noticing that we are starting to have problems with it. It idles very rough at traffic lights etc and the roof lining has decided to start falling down. Its booked in for a service on Monday so hopefully that might fix the idling problem. It has done 163,000km but the engine was rebuilt in 2002 and has apparently only done 36,000km since, however i have noticed that it is starting to burn oil a bit and you can occasionally smell it. Was thinking perhaps Rings have started to go but hope not.

Nah, it wont be rings, even if the motor was genuinely 163,000kms old. It will be more likely the valve stem oil seals.
The idle problems, hmmmm, depends how bad it is, all 1st gen magnas have been known for idle rough idle at lights while in D, put it in N. Otherwise, engine mounts cause this.
The idle on mine has smoothed out a lot since I put solid engine mounts in mine, a little more vibration that there was though.
Good luck with getting it fixed, and welcome to the forum.
Go post some photos of your cars in the 1st gen post your ride thread. :)

My 1st gens:

TP EFI auto sedan - daily driver
TP EFI auto wagon - reg'd, fixing it up for my sister
TM Carbie auto sedan - my late brother's car - 100,000 genuine kms, but blew a hose & cooked - lined up for a rebuild.

Ummm... Height looks about standard to me, going by the wheel arches.
Unless it was the side skirts that upset them?
what i was meant to say was i haven't lowered it again after getting off defect earlier this year. the back end used to be dumped :)

Ah! Personally, I like the look of the Series1 as standard. Some cars benefit from being dropped some, but not these.
My opinion only - feel free to disagree (but I'm right). ;P

Had the car serviced on Monday and the mechanic told me that the idling problem is carby related and i need to have the carby rebuilt. he Adjusted the idle cos he says it was to lean and it seems slightly better but still has the problem.(obviously as the carby needs rebuilding)
He couldn't find the oil problem but did say that it doesn't appear to be leaking anywhere apart from the rocker cover gasket but says the oil isn't making it to the exhaust so that's not the problem.
only other problem he found was the front brakes need repalcing because they are 90% worn.
Filled the tank for the first time last week and got 470km around town so was pretty happy with that. Refilled it Yesterday to see what difference if any the adjustment the mechanic made will make.

I think I might stay a 1st gen owner for a little while yet... I just got a brand new engine (0km on it!) for the car, since the old one was worn beyond repair (faulty thermostat for its life before I got it wore the engine significantly!).
Should keep the old girl purring along happily for many years to come yet :D
Out of curiosity though... does anybody know of any good car respray shops that also deal with rust patches for reasonable prices in vic?

How much did that cost you?

Yes I was surprised when my parts supplier told me he had that brand new block sitting there, although a bit of fiddling to put up (damn water pump mounting holes) it sounds as sweet as it would have new.

The motor I got Dave was a brand new Mitsubishi block, new block, crank and pistons assembled by Mitsubishi. Suspect was from a Triton or something similar as had not holes in the back of the block for the water pump. Was EFI though as has the holes for the support bracket for the manifold and the knock sensor. Got it for Dave for $550.00 still wrapped in plastic. Also got Dave a really good M7 head which was reco'd so effectivly has a brand new motor

I am still around from time to time. I had to change all my water hoses the other week, most of them original. Thats not bad for a 21 year old car.
