View Full Version : tyre choices
ok, well although i dont drive a magna anymore, i wasnt sure where to put this post (can be moved elsewhere if i put it in the wrong place)
ive just bought myself a set of 16" mazda6 wheels for my TX5 and am planning to get them on soon, now my main question is wat tyre profile should i put them on to keep the rolling diameter the same/as close as possible?
my current 15" wheels are at 205/55R15, but ive found another friend of mine has the same wheels but a different profile (215/55R15).. i wasnt sure whether to either go to 205/50R16 or 205/45R16... any help??
thanks in advance :)
EDIT: also thinking of tyre brands, at the moment im planning to go with Toyo tyres (personal preference, i like them), but theyre kinda blowing the budget a bit, does anyone know who would sell good quality tyres that are reasonably cheap?
I'd go with 205/50/16 personally.
205/45/16 would be a bit too small.....actually seen Corollas and the like running around on 205/45/16
I like Toyo tyres too, the Transas TEO-plus is particularly good, and reasonably priced too
Alternatively, try Firenza (made by Sumitomo) for a quiet ride which still offers good grip.

i had those on my old set of 16s for the magna (which is now on my brothers 3rd gen), thats where i got the love for Toyo's, atm my front current 15s are sittin on Transpath SW- reason y i chose those were coz the Transas TEO-plus didnt have the profile i needed.. and unfortunately again, its not in the correct profile to what i need
i did some surfing on the net and found a site to help me determine where i should go, and my suspisions of getting 205/50R16 are spot on, there is another option to go to 215/50R16 (which EGO told me a while back) but im still a bit iffy on that option
id really like to get the wheels on my car soon, and TUFF told me i should look into 2nd hand tyres :S should i do this and save up more for a set of brand new tyres? or should i just save up for new ones now and get them on in 3 or 4 months?
EDIT: just had another look on the Toyo tyres site, i mustve mis-read it coz i see now that there is a correct profile for the Transas TEO-plus!

That (original?) size 205/55/15 you mentioned - is that from the tyre placard? Also, what's your Load Rate?
U can use 215/50/16 - it's just within the + - 15 mm tolerance re circumference, being 14.9 mm larger. That means your speed would be 3 kph higher compared to the sample size.
There is Toyo Proxes 4 in size 205/50/16 LR 91 (LR too low?) very matching to sample size and I'd say it's better than the TEO. P 4 has more aggressive pattern but not too noisy, ok in wet. Also slightly softer compound, nice grip in dry. TEO is a hard, long lasting tyre - but it that's what u're after then decision is yours of course.
