Heyz all;
I am new to this forum and am seeking so advice urgently. I have a Mitsubishi Magna 1998 TF which has a 4G64 engine it has now done something like 270000kms and has started causing problems.
Engine is still running and car drives but I have decided to park it in the back yard till I figure out what I am going to do with it.
No matter what happens I ain't going to sell it. I have done so much to it and still have plenty of plans for it. Eg. Have JN style bodykit which kit I still need to get fitted, custom boot, car pc setup etc.
In the meantime I am driving my fiancé’s HOLDEN COMMODORE VY.
I want to do an engine conversion and was looking at probably purchasing a Mitsubishi Diamante Halfcut with 6G74 or possibly replacing it with a 6A13 TT engine.
Which path should I take and how much would I looking at cost wise to get the engine installed?
Can anyone recommended anyone who can do the engine conversion in VIC?

If you've got the money, turbo the 4G64. This engine is exactly identical to the Evo engines (4G63), except it has a longer stroke. Thus, you should be able to use most of the Evo parts to connect to your engine, then all you really need is a decompression header, cause the engine has a compression ratio of 10.something, your fav turbo and all the standard mods.
If you've got your mind set on a 6G74, then things are pretty simple. There isn't too much to it because the Magnas all use the same engine bay. There have been a couple of threads on it, which you should be able to dig up.

Thanx for the advice. I was initially think about turbo charging the 4g64 and I did a lot of research on it but because the engine sounds like its going to die I thought maybe I should just do an engine swap.
The Mitsubishi Eclipse has the 4g64 engine it and I remember reading somewhere on the net that the stock internals can handle upto 17psi. Not sure if it true though.
So the 6G74 should fit without any problems? Do you know how much I would be looking at cost wise to have this done if I was to buy a halfcut.
I would really love to get a 6A13 TT engine conversion but because it is from a Galant not sure if it would fit and am assuming engineering cert will also be required. Would this be true?

Hey Mate,
Considering your engine has done a lot of k's you have 2 options, turbo the current engine or do a swap with a 3.5L engine.
If you turbo your 4g64 then you will obviously need to rebuild, although as stated any 4g63 part will fit your current engine which means you have a lot of cheap parts to choose from, if you have the money i would suggest a dohc conversion with forged internals then go with a turbo kit from an evo or something like that.
If you just want the engine conversion then source out a 3.5L engine from a TJ sports or VRX, ralliart etc etc!!
BTW the 4g64 wont be able to handle 17psi on stock internals, 8psi max and thats pushing it!!
good luck!

In terms of the Turbo option, you're looking at about $8000, if you get a lot of work done. It should put out maybe 200kw, but it would never run anywhere near 17psi with the stock internals, maybe with forged stuff though.
As for the 6G74, it'll cost about $4500, if you get a reconditioned motor etc. but it will only put out 170kw when you've got the exhaust etc. Bear in mind you need a new exhaust (4 cyl to 6 cyl) and there are a number of other small things you may need to look at.
Me personally, I'm trying to find money for the first option, but it's a slow process. The 6G74 is definitely the cheaper and slightly easier option, but I'm a big fan of the Evo's so I'm trying to convert my Magna to an Evo replica (with the same performance :P :D ). It's probably not worth the trouble to do either if your engine sounds pretty bad, cause a rebuild will cost about $1500 dollars. Which is considerably cheaper than either of the other options. Don't try to buy another 4G64 though, you won't find one. They're hard to come across as it is.
BTW, all the prices are probably exorbitant, but this is a really basic guideline to follow.

Not really mate, there are still a few 4G64's available last time i enquired. There is a few on ebay as well.
But yes the 6G74 conversion is a hell of a lot cheaper but obviously not as quick as the turbo conversion would be.
If you want more info on turbocharging and a DOHC conversion visit this site http://4g64.150m.com/turbo2.html it has made my life a lot easier when it came to choosing parts although money has always been against me

No not impossible it has been done before in a few magnas, i think custom engine mounts are needed and a few other things although i would imagine it would cost a lot of money unless you can do the work yourself!
