hey guys, this is aimed more at the people who have cracked open their engines and done some serious work, now, this is gonna sound silly, but i want a big lumpy cam in my magna, i love the sound of a throbbing lumpy ass idle :P, now as far as i know its not as easy as getting a big long duration custom grind and just dropping it in, just wondering what are the mods i would need to support it? ive got the "amc standard special".... pacemakers, 2.5" with a lukey and k&n filter, what else am i gonna need? valves, lifters, springs etc... im not 100% mechanically minded, electronics are more my thing so yeh, im pretty much flying blind here, any info muchly appreciated,
cheers,
tom

The valves themselves shouldn't need replacing, the valve springs are a different matter however.

The standard ECU won't be able to cope with anything bigger than ralliart spec cams, so a piggyback or full replacement ECU will be required (piggyback will do the job fine).

If it's the sound you are interested in you might also want to look at modifying your exhaust. Having the centre resinator replaced with a piece of straight thru pipe should do the trick

the standard hydrulic tappets will hammer out they loose oil above 6000
seek out manual adjust cams or racing quality tappets

have $1200 to start with

long duration cam will give you the lumpy idle you want. Heavy duty valve springs or if u want high lift search around for some unique springs like I've found, as the ralliart valve springs (what I got, same as normal but stronger) wont go much more above 20thou more lift safely.

You'll want the heads ported and polished otherwise your wasting your time

You'll want your cam gears modified with a vernier gear added otherwise your wasting your time

You'll want new lifters otherwise your wasting your time

You'll want to reflash your ecu, an interceptor if the cams are mild or a piggy back system with a Haltec replacement or EMS stinger or the like.

If you get a lumpy or agressive cam, your car will probably be a real pig to drive.

To get the car to handle that sort of profile, you'll need a lot of top end work. I've seen photos of a hotted up Holden 186 red motor that'd pulled the rocker pivots out of the head due to the cam.

What about one of RPW's pre figured out sets?

looking at your profile you have a 4cyl auto.. Having an auto can be troublesome to the idle quality of a lumpy cam profile. convert to a manual first perhaps
