View Full Version : 380 faults ??
My dad is upgrading his car, he is either getting a new bmw to replace his current one or get a new 380 platinum and a new lancer(for mum).
obviously he wants the bmw but of course mum wants another new car too so she is pushing for him to get the two rather then the one haha.
Is there any recall's or anything that he should look for before buying it ?
any input would be appriciated

Recalls.gov.au only has one listing for the 380:
http://www.recalls.gov.au/view_recall_detail.php?Recall_ID_Auto=13736
That was almost 2 years ago now though.

ive had the car for 7000kms and my only complaint is the speedo accuracy. but i think it might be just my car cause we took another 380 for a drive and it was dead accurate. oh and the interior plastics scratch really easily.
a new beemer is nice, but then theres the risk of only driving it half the time lol

If we are talking value for money/features etc, get a series 3 380 and a new Lancer being released shortly over a new BMW for sure.

Yeah, S3 380 should come out in a few weeks from what I have read, and the new Lancer should me available in August, if you want one though I'd put your name on the waiting list, I have a feeling there will be biiiiig demand for the new Lancer as soon as its released.

The only known fault in the 380 was in series 1 and was fixed a couple of years ago.
They are considered one of the best choices for large cars in terms of reliability and running cost (also won most 'secure' Australian car in terms of theft)...
Series 3 is coming out soon but I'd be surprised if they launch a special edition version straight away as the new features will most likely be the selling point for a while...

Thats the base model. Its 34990 + gov and dealer delivery charges.
Heaps more safety ?
...it has an ESC equivalent...I don't know, I've survived this long without it. I wouldn't call that heaps more.
Heaps more extra's ?
This is where you've lost me. It's the base model and hence doesn't have many of the extra's at all, especially when compared to the Platinum which is 2K+ cheaper.

BMW's depreciate a bit, if your Dad can wait a year or two, the current model will be cheaper by almost the same amount a Lancer costs. That's if he doesn't mind 2nd hand.
If you can convince him to get the 380 then he'll have good warranty for both cars and a little more bargaining power at the dealership.

No its 34990 drive away.
I'm more talking about in the base model its 6 airbags standard, mp3, electric front seat, cruz, trip computer (fuel etc) traction control, better fuel econ, more power, 6 speed gear box.
They're just a couple that pop into my head.

But the toyota is ugly?
Get him to either get a second hand BMW and a second hand/new lancer, or the new 380 and the new lancer.

It's been proven time after time 380 has the best resale in terms of dollars lost come time to sell when compared with the other big 3, so I'm not sure what you're talking about.

I'd disagree myself brett, while i can tell u that and ford or holden traded in is worth nothing i tend to think both the aurion and 380 are doin well in the trade in department.

Didn't you just say the same thing I did? lol  Holden & Ford = More depreciation due to higher starting price. 380 = less depreciation due to lower starting price.
Ford Falcon XT = 38.3%
Holden Commodore Berlina = 47.8%
Mistubishi 380 SX = 50.8%
Toyota Aurion Prodigy = 61%
Residual 3 year resale - figures taken from Redbook and stolen figures from Wheels mag.

I was going off their website which says 34990 + charges. It might be out of date now I guess.
Everything you mention except the 6 speed gear box is in the 380 but the Aurion is more powerful...as long as you go in a straight line. From what I've read it doesn't handle through corners very well.
But whoops, I think we've turned this into a 380 vs Aurion thread :D

Just bought the 380, noticed that the tappet noise is more pronounced than my previous tl magna. Not sure if it's the injectors but can hear it ticking at idle, goes away when moving. Anyone with this problem?
Also, noticed that it doesn't go into 5th gear until about 61 km/h, I remember someone in this forum saying that it should go into 5th by 40km/h? Can anyone confirm this?

tappets/lifters... is it under warranty? should be so just take it back to them, tell them to fix it!
as to 5th gear, if its anything like the KJ2 tippy, 61k's sounds about right, 40k's would just be ridiculous and would almost stall it lol

I'd be very surprised if it's tappets, more likely injectors. Mine are a lot quieter than the KE I had.
The 380 doesn't seem to engage 5th until 60kmh in my car. It'll do this tho on light throttle applications even going up a reasonable grade hill. At that speed the engine speed is under 1000rpm so I can't see how it can engage fifth below this speed.
