my tj has the factory piping less middle muffler and twin tip stainless end muff.
this in too loud now as we have a bubbie (well the drone is anyway)
im lookin at buyin a brand new tj sports muff from work. Can anyone tell me if this will be as quite as factory or still have a decent sound?
what we want is an exaust that is quiet on the hiway but sounds good when ya hit the loud peddel. Any tips appriciated!!!

Keep the factory exhaust and change the rear muffler to a redback or lukey straight through style.

yeah going to a standard "sports" or straight thru muffler should pretty much completely get rid of the drone. i used to have stainless cannons, swapped it for redbacks and the difference was amazing

Hey dude,
You can ask Paul, I have an exhaust that purrs nicely at idle, fires up when the pedal is pushed and is quiet (enough) at cruising. I just went to a place up the road and saidd "I want a sports-style muffler that's roadworthy" (here in melb it's 93decibals at idle). I don't know what you're looking for, but mine works a treat and I'm very happy with the sound.
cheers,
-ian
**edit**: they put a "semi-straight through" on mine. maybe ask for that. I only paid $180 for rear muffler and twin exit chrome tip.

if you dont have a center muffler put an 18" (length) or bigger hotdog on it, for 2.5" I pay $59 fitted for redback ones.
That will make things quiter and hotdogs take the drone out of exhausts

That's such a general statement....every manufacturer typically has a wide range of mufflers, including those that will drone badly, and those that won't!
I had a Lukey straight-through muffler installed a few months ago (not sure what model it was, but it was physically quite small), but it droned very badly!.
I then had it replaced with a Lukey LR2779 straight-through muffler, and it's much quieter, with no droning at all.
The LR2779 is physically quite a bit larger than the previous Lukey I had.
You can't go by the brand alone - you need to ensure you get the right model of muffler too!.
Cheers,
Martin.

well i stand corrected there about generalising the brand. i have 2 x 12' resonators fitted now and it sounds ok. the idle is freakin sweet and it sounds good when you hit it, but i'll be going for the lukey though because i want it to be a fair bit quieter. the mercury is too loud for my liking and would be better suited to someone who wants to be noticed when they hit it.

just wondering if anyone who owns a lukey LR2779 can tell me if they get any droning around the 2000 RPM on the highway? i currently have a mercury with 2 resonators but it vibrates and drones so bad for people in the back seat they get nausea over long distances which is not cool... what is a quiet hi-flow replacement if not the lukey?

I have a Lukey LR2779, and I definitely don't get any droning.

Martin.
I have a Berklee straight through and it doesn't drone at any revs.

I disagree, I have a mercury muffler and I don't get any drone whatsoever, and it's just slightly louder than stock...

That's such a generic statement....some Mercury mufflers are nosier than others!
And just to prove that you shouldn't bag an entire brand just because one specific model of muffler is noisy:
I had a small straight-through Lukey muffler (unknown model number) on my TJ wagon, and it droned very badly.
I then replaced it with a Lukey LR2779 straight-through muffler, and the droning has been eliminated.

Martin.
