it might be the reverse lamp switch on the transaxle. refer to gregorys manual. I know that in TR's, the switch is placed on top of the gearbox in the engine compartment. maybe check if the wire hasn't come loose or is broken. Also, have you checked that curent actually runs to the lamps? I know you've checked fuses, but maybe connections are broken somewhere along the way to the rear.

that's what I can think of right now.

From the Haynes Guide (guide to checking and renewal):

1. The backup light switch is located on the top of the transaxle, near the right front corner of the housing.

2. Turn ignition to ON position, shift lever to reverse position. Backup light should turn on.

3. If it doesn't, check the 10A backup light fuse in the fuse box under the instrument panel on drivers side.

4. If fuse is OK, check that there is voltage available on the battery side of the switch (with ignition turned to ON)

5. If no voltage on battery side, check wire between the fuse and switch, if there is voltage, put the shift lever in reverse and check if voltage is on earth side of switch.

6. If no voltage on earth side, renew switch.

RENEWEAL

1 Unplug electrical connector from switch

2. Unscrew switch

3. Screw in new switch and tighten it to the correct torgue (30-35Nm)

4. Plug in connector

5. Check operation of backup lights. If still no voltage, check length of wire for breaks/wear.

Hope that helps in some way.

EDIT: This is from the section for a manual, didn't look at auto.
