Hi, I have read a lot of the threads here in an attempt to fix the problem that I am having. Althought there are a lot of things that are useful here I haven't found anything that specifically relates to my problem.

So my problem is that when I am driving,(1994 TR Elite 2.4 efi auto) the car seems as though it is about to stall but then picks up again. This will happen when I am both driving and at a stand still whether I am in 'D' or 'P' or 'N' or 'R'.

I have read that a lot of people have problems with the ICS (idle control sensor). However would this be the problem for me as the problem happens both when the car is driving and idling. The problem only happens every now and then. I took it to a auto electrician and when he had it for the day the problem never appeared.

Any ideas would be gratefully appreciated.

Thanks

Chad

I had a problem with my old TR that Id just be driving and the revs would drop to 0 for a second then contunie on its merry way, this happened regardless of whether the car was moving or idling.

Replaced alternator and issue went away.

BTW its 2.6L not 2.4L.

Check the connector going to the top of the distributor - if you have some corrosion in there or a loose connector, the engine may momentarily stall or lean out. I had the same problem, and it turned out to be that (although I didn't have the issue at idle, which may be another problem altogether).

If that connector is OK, also check the distributor rotor for wear and pitting, and check the distributor cap for cracks and worn points. The carbon button in the middle should be easily movable and should have plenty of carbon left (about 0.5cm or so). If those are also OK, check the spark plug cables and plugs, and ensure they aren't worn or arcing across. Then if all else fails, clean the throttle body and check for vacuum leaks. If not that, it may be something more serious like the airflow meter or the fuel system, or in the worst case, the transmission.

It's a long list I know, but it's one of those issues that can't be resolved from a single check!

Thanks guys for the quick response and plenty of info there for me to get started. I should have stated originally that I have replaced the spark plugs and the leads because I thought that this could be the problem however it hasn't gone away. There are plenty of other things to try so I will post when I have found the one that was the culprit.
