Hey everyone,

Okay this is a new issue, my cousin told me about it this arvo. Last night he went ot the drive ins with my car. he said that whilst he was there, the radio was on fine and everything, but when he tried to start it, everything went dead. like everything. didn't even get a small turn. fair enough, flat battery. he managed to start it with a jumpstarter.

He came to pick me up from fountain gate this afternoon and he told me he had exactly the same problem when he got into the car. everything was dead, not a signle sound or anything. he said he then passed it from "P" into "1" and back to "p", turned the key, and it started perfectly.

but wait, theres more. just as we were getting into the car at about 9:00 tonight, he turned the key, and again, nothing. flicked the healights on, nothing. locked the doors remotely. no lock. Just now I got home, still nothing when starting etc. so I opened the bonnet to check if battery cables were loose, oxidisation etc...nothing like that. Then went to open the boot and noticed the boot light on. turned the key, and MAGIC, it started straight up ready for work.

Anyone heard of this problem before? If so, please help.

Fanx,
-ian

Check the grounding cables attached to the car body and to the engine. If one of those is loose or broken it can cause things like that to happen. Also look for any bared wires connected around the battery, and check the connections on the alternator, starter motor and starter solenoid. If the issue reoccurs, use a multimeter and check voltages at various points around the car, especially the battery. If the battery is really low voltage at the time when you can't start it, it is likely a short circuit. If it is normal voltage, it is likely a broken wire somewhere.

I would also suggest to check the inhibitor switch on the transmission and make sure it is adjusted correctly, as that can cause the issue with changing gears to make it start.

Take off the battery connections, sand paper them back to bare metal along with the terminals on the battery.

Just because it doesn't look corroded doesn't mean it isn't.
