I know plenty of you guys don't like these things, but I do. And I figured if I was gunna do it I'd do it properly and make it look factory.
For those interested in doing the same thing, it's an S2000 button. Hole cut in dash with a 25mm hole saw and then made bigger from behind dash with a Dremel tool. Then hand file from behind dash to put the notches in ABS plastic in the dash to take the flutes in the button body (stops it twisting arpund in the dash hole). Because the S2000 dash is thicker than the Magna one, I made up a nylon spacer to sit between the the dash back and the button spring clip that holds it in the dash. All this took about 4 hours of taking it slowly and carefully so as not to bugger the dashlol Half an hour for the sparkie to rig it up and we're away  What do you reckon??

definatley different..
i guess you would get used to it but the 5 series BMW i detailed a few weeks back had one and i thought it was kind of pointless..
yeah, fair enough you dont have to put the keys in the ignition (not sure if you set yours up that way) but i suppose its one of those things you do just for something different and just so you can say "yeh, i got push-button start"
nice job though, looks very neat..

thats pretty cool. would love to do this on my next car
Nice work. Did you have to remove the dash? Also, why not on the otherside of the
steering wheel? You should do a write up as well on exactly how you did it.

Looks nice mate and congrats on the mod, but i'd be guessing you'd still need to put the key in the ignition for the steering lock to unlock, which kind of defeats the purpose, and even if you have rigged it so it doesn't need the key, doesn't that make the car very easy to steal?

Nope you don't have to remove the dash. The only panel you remove is the one under the steering column in the footwell. Putting it on left left side gave me more room and put it outa the way of dangling keys. PLUS - very important technical thing , this - putting it on left side means the passenger gets a real good looklol
Cost of the button is $130 from Honda. I have the 40mm nylon rod lying around after I used it for making factory look intake snorkle resonator hole plugs (which I also recommend as a proper factory look). Its made in Oz, "Ertalon" nylon 6SA and is $33/metre. It's solid, so you have to drill it out to get the donut shape, and then file the nicks in it for it to engage with the button body profile.
Setup works same as S2000, Aston, FPVGT etc. You stil have to insert the key and turn to full "on" position. The car will not actually start till you press the button.
Happy to do a write up if people want it.
Also happy to supply people as a freebie with a ready cut basic 6mm circular nylon spacer for you to hollow out and shape.

but you still need to put your key in the ignition to unlock the steering and the factory immobiliser. correct?
so if you have to put the key in and turn it to on then press start.... ahhh to confusing 2 handed start process....
after you show your mates you wont use it again.. lol
but good work on trying something new

You are absolutely right. Confusing two handed process. But if it's good enough for Aston Martin V8 Vantage, it's good enough for a....er...Magna:bowrofl:

so you have to turn the key whilst pushing the button? so basically tou'v just made the process of starting your car a 2 hand job, and more or less made it harder to start your car (not that its hard but you get the picture).... hmmmm, pointless, if it was just putting your keys to "ign" and pressing the button i may have give you a pass, but A for presentation none the less

Nice job although as already stated you have just made it harder to start your car??
Personally i would have gone for the remote button start, much more efficient as you can start the car when your not even in it lol

looks really good man, like its actually meant to be there (as you intended) I probably would have put it on the other side next to the Ingition but I don't actually know if theres enough room back there. But anyway good job:D

The mercades creditcard method would be a very nice feature if you could rig it
I dont remember what model it was but its recent. An encoded transponder is made in the shape of a creditcard and you keep it in your wallet or pocket. When you get close to the car the transponder unlocks the door you are nearest too and no others as well as automaticaly locking when you walk away. Once the transponder card is inside the vehical its just push button start, no keys.
And before you say steal his wallet and you stole a mercedes. There are no signifying markers of the car unlocking eg repeater flash etc. You just have to know its your car. Also a voice code can be added to the start button procedure via the cars inbuilt blutooth.
If you fitted that to a magna... id probly marry you.

Nah, you misread what I said. You do in fact turn the key all the way to IGN, then let go the key and press the button.
And I've had the remote start thingy in a BMW635CSi I owned (back when I had money before sending kids to Uni broke me  ). It was a total pain in the ass and caused major problems with the 6's complex electronics. The system came on the car and the first thing I did when I bought was remove the system

Hahaha amen to that. I've always been a fan of the push button start, purely for wank factor haha.
Remote starts are a pain in the ass IMO, seen them fitted to all sorts of cars and can cause big headaches, just easier to walk to the car, lean in, start it and walk off.

Just a quick question.
Do you have to hold the button in until the engine starts to keep the starter motor cranking or is it like a new M5 where you just touch it and it starts the car (ie, it automatically runs the starter for as long as it has too.)?
Good job mate.

Remote starts are always handy though .....just to make sure the thing doesn't explode due to a bomb rigged underneath the car after you accidentally slept with a mafia bosses daughter after a big night on the drink.............
Good initiative with the start button tho....very tastefully done!

was going to ask the same thing..
would be better if it did.. either way, wouldnt matter i dont reckon..
also noticed the other week that the late model VZ commies had that feature, just tap the key from on to start and let it go and it will crank over enough to start automatically.. was kinda cool..

also....
i would be paraniod with that function.. you wouldnt be able to tell ANYONE about that kind of feature of your car in fear of it being stolen..
spose it would be no different to someone stealing ya car keys and taking your car.. probably easier for someone to take keys than someones wallet if its always in their back pocket..

could be an idea for a security feature. if you made the startup button hidden. so if anyone stole ur keys theyd still be rooted :P

Some people have them in their cars, normally hidden somewhere.
Could also be called a kill switch....

totally useless, but i love it!
a cool unique mod that i haven't seen on a magna, would love to do it myself, but i think i'd get too frustrated with always having to press the start button...
I'd like to add a red button to my car, that set off a hidden alarm and locked all the doors n **** and made everything go crazy.. so when people get in my car i'd say "whatever you do, don't push the red button!" then they'd push it, cause that's what you do.. and then i'd *sigh* "i told you not to push the red button"...
but then, i like to do stupid things like that :P

even though its a bit annoying i reckon.
the new aurion presara only i think, has a button but the remote has a proximity sensor. so it can be in you pockets or console and you just press the button.

Absolutely perfect :D
Now if only I had one of these.....
BTW there is a company in the US somewhere that makes replica "Eleanor" GT500s. Complete with the "Go Baby Go" button and NOS setup.
Edit 1: Mum has a Prius. The start system, etc. in that thing is awesome. All you need is the keys within 10m and you can open up the doors. And also start the car. It's pretty damn sweet.

Good job mate.
Procedure is insert key and turn all the way to on. Let go of key. Press the button as long as needed to start. My dad actually owns an M5 and it's setup is different because the button is plugged directly into the computer. The S2000 setup (and hence the one I have) is simply inserting a mechanical switch into the existing mechanical process.

I wondered that too. But I tell you it was an eye opener getting under the dash and looking at the ignition. Security shielding around the key and barrel is almost non-existent. And all the wires coming out the back of the ignition swtich are all easily accessible and beautifully colour coded for theives to work out. So it wouldn't have matter where I put the button as a security measure. Bit scary really how vulnerable all this stuff is.

yeah, most Toyota's do that these days, corolla's, Camry's, you name it. even the outlander. lol its still cool, but you just wouldn't feel as special walking up to your $200,000 merc s-class and doing that when a little granny does the same in her $30,000 corolla parked next to you :bowrofl:

i would have it wired up parrallel to the normal ignition so that you can still start it with the key (but you still have to turn the key to the on position first), so that if a mechanic has to drive your car they don't break something trying to get it started.
