Can anyone give me a reason not to make my own strut brace? I can't think of anything that they could possible be made with that I can't replicate (excluding the look).

I have read over a few guides and they all seem to have no problems, can anyone think of something? Else manufacturing starts tommorow.

Thanks in advanced.

ive seen a few cars with backyard made one and they were aight never had an issue. as long as they dont look dodgey i guess u would'nt have problems. just put into account that if u have (not wishing) a front on collision in the future that ur design wont hurt u, if u know wat i mean:think:

$165 + delivery from the forum sponsor seems like a pretty good reason to me, but then again - if you think you can make your own for cheaper then go right ahead.

I'm sure you can make one for $50 or less if you have some metal bars laying around.:D

Metal bars?

Weight would be an issue if you were to make it out of some rio or something because then the damned thing would weigh 50kg. Aluminium would be the best, two rods of say, 20mm alu bar welded onto some strut top plates.

One thing that may be important is too much stiffness may make the ride too uncomfortable, from what i've seen, they're never OTT, they come across to me as a compromise - except for race cars which, from what i've seen, are usually a length of square aluminium tube or flattend c'fibre.

If it was me i'd do what I said, get two bars of thumb-thick aluminium, get them welded together and bent at the ends to connect to the plates going on your strut tops.

Something else to think about is the chassis to strut-top types, on hatches etc, they are two piece that bolt onto the firewall from each strut-top, they may be even better because your getting extra chassis support as well as keeping the strut-tops stiff...

Aluminium is out of the question, I could cast it but I would have to cast it as one unit and it would be to hard to measure/pour.

I might just do it with some mild steel or something as we don't have a tig welder.

also have to get the attatchment angles right to minimize flex in the welds and use a decent metal to minimize flex in the bar,

Mine's a home made one, made by Matt.

It was great on the TS. Much stiffer than the whiteline ones too. :D
