View Full Version : Insurance Companies and Lowering Magnas

I am finding that some insurance companies refuse to cover my car if i lower it. I am looking to drop it just an inch but even this is enough to disqualify me from using their services. They argue that lowering increases the handling and therefore promotes faster and riskier driving. I thought improved handling was a big tick in the safety column but i can see the point they are trying to make.

I have noticed that so many on the forums have lowered their cars, do you guys have insurance lol, and ball park of how much you pay extra just because your car is lowered. I was told that 17" by 7 width is the max for wheels too.

Finally, where do i even go to get my car lowered, lol? I am new to this stuff so i don't know much.

Depending on your age and driving history some insurance companies won't let you have certain mods.

If your planning to do a few mods I would go with JustCars, There quotes include any modifications as long as they are legal.

Dropping a magna 1" will be fine as it will still be higher than 100mm off the ground, as for wheels this is a touchy issue but 8" to 8.5" wide rims should fit without clearance issues but you should be covered in case of and accident. Also, depending on what year/model ur car is state that you have standard 17x7s from factory and get a tyre placard from a VRX or verada GTiV from mitsu spare parts if your that worried.

Nah, i'm rating one and only ever had to claim because of hail damage which wrecked the roof and body of my TH magna. Hardly my fault and i am over 25 too. I don't understand it.

Have just started ringing around to more companies, NRMA allows 17" wheels and 30mm lowered, will try RACV and Budget Direct next.

Try AAMI they allow certain mods. Get a quote on-line and there is provision to enter what mods you have.

im with AAMI and they cool with as many mods you have unless you under 25, then its a limit of 2 mods. Reasonable premium too for rating 1. Might shop around after i get my rating 1 for life though to see if theres a better deal out there :D

I'm with Ryno, don't mind lowering, dark tint, rims, wider tyres and the frosted tail-lights (despite being illegal).

Just had to have a light output test on the tail-lights and they were all good with it.

Have had two repairs done through them and not had a single issue, quick and easy and choice of repairer.

hmmmm..... I'm with NRMA and yeah the 30mm lowering thing is right (although I'm lower) but they have insured me for 18"s on my TJ. isnt it like 2" larger the standard diameter max for legallity?

There's no 2 inch diameter rule. It's the rolling diameter of the tyre mustn't be a certain % difference. Also the rim must not be more than 1" wider than stock, ie 7 inches.

I am with RACQ (queensland) which is the same as RACV, RAA etc etc. Mine is lowered 60mm at front, got 18" wheels, stereo, etc etc.. all on the insurance list. (However, their max lowering they accept is 50mm, so i said i have 50mm. hehehe)

Insurance hasn't gone up at all with all this listed. I pay under $500 a year, with excess of $600 i think it was.. not too sure on that one.

Im with Allianz (spelling?) its $540/year.
That includes $2k worth of audio gear and a strut brace.
Next year when I turn 25 hopefully insurance will be much easier and more options, but for now they were the best I could find. I am VERY limited with what modifications I can do though.

It sounds like if you can wrangle a deal with a company go for it because there is so much talk and some of it conflicting and this can depend on who you actually speak to over the phone. Two different workers at the same company could make statements that allow for different things.

I just spent a good part of the last week dealing with a large financier operating in Sydney to get them to remove finance off of the car i bought and everytime i rang to follow up on the same query i was told so many different things.

My new ride is temporarily insured to allow me time to shop for the company that will allow me to mod my car for a good price. I'll let ya's know who i end up with.

I'm with AAMI, and as said beforehand, if you're a driver under 25 you can only have two "performance" modifications. Mine include rims and lowering (hence why i don't have a fancy exhaust yet :P )
I've got no extra cost to my insurance. Also they didn't actually know about these mods until someone crashed into me, haha.
