i have an old IBM laptop and its mother board is fried. i was wondering if its possible to remove the screen which is still in good condition and wire it up somehow so i can install it in my boot, do all screens work the same or, will it only work with a laptop setup with mother board/ video card etc. might install a PS2 to it if posible as the screen is a large 10inch

Have a read of this.
I and would try out this ebay ad. (http://cgi.ebay.com.au/VGA-AV-S-TV-TFT-LCD-Panel-LVDS-Controller-R-C_W0QQitemZ200124068187QQihZ010QQcategoryZ3698QQrd Z1QQcmdZViewItem)

Basically it is possible but pretty customized to the laptop panel in question. laptops come with controllers that turns the raw analog data into a digital signal that the lcd panel can understand. This controller is hardwired into teh laptop (as aposed to hardwired into the lcd in a desktop lcd) and cannot be change to vga input. So you buy a controller that is compatible with the lcd in question. 6 or 8 bit single channel or dual channel controllers are the main differences in what will fit your monitor. Best bet is to pm that ebay guy and ask if you laptop screen is supported. If not your better off buy a new lcd, they are cheap as chips atm anyway.

for what its worth, u may as well just open the laptop fully and making a frame around the screen and cover away the laptop, then u can use a remote control with an IR extender, mount the IR receiver above the screen, and u can control it easily. run a simple usb input device for the PS2, use the harddrive as a media center... watever u want, it will mean no screwing around detaching it all etc, and still keep the full quality of the original screen, without having to convert it to 640x480 or some stupid res.

for the above solution, u would only need to pay $100 or so for the USB dongle for the PS2, and maybe $50 for the remote and extender, but u would get much more than that out of the actual system

......i just noticed u sed the mobo has fried...dammit lol

As stated, it's pretty-much a no-go. I've looked into it numerous times, the wiring and signal to a laptop LCD in no way matches a standard VGA wiring / signal, you have to have a converter which is way too bloody expensive to even bother with. It's annoying to have a spare LCD lying around in perfectly good shape that's completely unuseable, but that's the way it is.

Ebay the screen.. as someone might have the same IBM laptop with a stuffed screen.. and with the proceeds buy the LCD screen suitable for the car..

Have a look for a chip that has traces leading to most of the wires.. DO a google on it and you might find a controller board for it.
