Hi guys, i'm picking up a DOHC 6G72 this Saturday for $950 (with the help of my mates car and trailer i'm hiring for the day). And the ECU is $150 extra.
I would like to know what other things I need to have this big boy installed. I don't want any bling extractors or custom bits and pieces. I would just like to have the basics up and running for now and then maybe work on those cool parts later on when start upgrading everything once again.
So just to get all the bare basics set up (for a starters i'll have the 6G72 DOHC motor and the ECU). What other things/parts need to be purchased? So I can start sourcing these parts.
Won't it just need to be wired?
This will be installed in my auto.
So Just the engine, ECU, wiring, connector hoses and extractors is all I need right? Just for it to be up and running?
P.S Adrian I was wondering if you still have your ECU for sale?

If this is being installed in the auto have you had a chat to Chuck about why he keeps blowing TCUs?
Will need power steering pump hoses made up AFAIK

Coolies
So power steering pump hoses, extractors and wiring? :)

by power steering hoses you need to just get a thick bit of extra length cut from repco...
air con wont hook up but its not rly necessary; fans can still put hot engine air in if its cold...
i still have my ecu
you'll need a heavy duty clutch too, otherwise itll just burn out in about 4 weeks
then yeah wiring

Woohoo - another DOHC conversion - nice
I was once told that by the time you buy an ECU and get it wired up (if paying someone else) - you may have been better off buying an aftermarket ECU.
I think you may need custom extractors - (DOHC/SOHC may not fit when put in our cars ) think I read that somewhere.
What! ...no Air Conditioning!?
I'd seriously consider a Manual conversion while it's all out.

Yeah the SOHC Heads have round exhaust ports while DOHC's have rectangluar Exhaust ports.
to save some money, all you need to do is import some stock DOHC manifolds from NZ, problem solved

Okies went to see the engine tonight and was offered this 91 3000GT half cut for $1500 and I couldn't say no as it was dirt cheap and the engine had only 42,000kms and under the valve cover everything was sparkling new and gold.
It comes with all the wiring so I guess i'll be okay.
As you guys have said, i'll have no air con and I spoke to chuck earlier. He doesn't have air con either. I'll just have to get the air con fixed while getting the engine transplant done at the same time. I'm sure i'll be able to fix the air con right?? I don't see why it won't work??

What will you be getting rid of as a result of putting in a new engine?

I've always liked the deep burble sound of the 24 valve engine so i'll be running it N/A for a while until I see what my options are. I'm not sure weather or not to start with the supercharger kit all over again but it's just too much hassle i want something reliable. NRMA had to help me out 6 times this year because of it and i'm not up for that anymore. I was going to go for the 6G74 transplant but i'd rather stick with something that I can easily get help with this time from the forums (and from my mate chuck of course). Sell ya my supercharger dave hahaha
.... Ahhh let's listen to the the sound of double overhead cams. Just music to my ears even on the low revs
DOHC fly by (http://members.optuszoo.com.au/mnikoloias/sigma_dohc.mp3)
DOHC take off (http://members.optuszoo.com.au/mnikoloias/startup.mp3)
that sounds freakin sexual. what brand supercharger is yours?

It's an Eaton M90 (or m09 like i used to call it hahahaha)
Come over on the weekend i'll be able to show ya. I'll have it dismantled by then!

what do you think the automatic stands for.
They run a hydraulic clutch pack which will engage mechanically under certain loads/conditions. I'm looking now for info on the need to upgrade these 'torque converters'
Air con you just need some custom piping, nothing major i haven't bothered yet as i can hack the 35*deg days in summer without it

Is that expensive adrian? Hopefully not more than like $500? Haha
I dun wanna wait till summer hits and i've got no air con and i'm on the way to see girlfriend omg.
Will the heater work still?

**** yeah!! A massive difference!!!
And man if you can get the m90 to work with it (which is possible just a matter of $$) it would run in the 13's if it were a manual

The car would actually be quicker in atx than a manual (provided you have a shift kit and an lsd) because of the gear ratios. In manual form the wheels are more likely to just spin until about 3rd gear. The tall first hear in the atx would help eliminate some of the wheelspin.
EDIT: I thought I should make it clear that this is in regards to a blown DOHC...in atmo guise the manual is undoubtedly quicker.
Gotrice...if my memory serves me right....the manual magna clutch is the same as the GTO clutch which had the dohc stock....I dont see why you really need a heavy duty clutch...maybe if you were putting out 200+ hp...
And yes the aircon is like a 200 Dollar fix....but like I told you....I havent had time and couldnt be ****ed dropping my car off to get it done.
EDIT2: ****...forgot to say : Dimi...you're gonna have some small problems with the GTO ecu and the magna...jump on ebay and get a diamante ecu....

The GTO loom is different to the magna/verada loom....

Can I use the gto ecu that come's with it? Or do I need to get a Diamante ECU/aftermarket ecu?
I'm pretty sure I can use the computer that comes with the engine in the half cut. The engine comes with all the wires and electricals etc.
Chuck
06-07-2007, 07:36 AM
You probably CAN use the gto ecu...but just remember that the gto and diamante had different wiring and components....thats why Im saying you're better off getting a diamante ecu and loom....
dimi108
06-07-2007, 07:43 AM
Will I have to get the diamante ECU from a DOHC diamante? What have you got in your one bro?
Chuck
06-07-2007, 07:56 AM
Yeah I got the ecu and loom from the same dohc diamante the engine came from.
GoTRICE
06-07-2007, 09:51 AM
gto loom is shorter... ecu is under the headunit area...
My loom was too much of an effort to get out... but i'd still say there'd need to be some electrical work done... i don't think you can just hook it up and alls sweet sort of thing as temp sensors etc would still be hooked up to sohc loom...
paul i rkn get an interceptor cheap if you can and run it with the gto/diamante ecu...
There's an aussy mob who make full aftermarket ECU's called Adaptronic, the fully installed price is around the $1500 mark, so you might be able to throw your engine in and take this to an adaptronic tuner and they'll do your loom and a fully adjustable ECU and your set for any future mods forever, no need for a piggyback and it possibly not working!

Thanks for the info!
But i want to use the standard GTO ECU that comes with the engine already. And i'm hoping this would work. As I just want to get it up and running for now and want to avoid having to pay another extra $1000+ for an ecu if it can be done.
[TUFFTR]

Got the engine today. Just a tick over 60 000km. 3 months warranty. $1500 for the front cut. Came with all engine wiring, alternator, starter motor, air condition compressor, coil pack.
$45 to deliver to the workshop that's going to be fitting it for me which is 25km away from place of purchase.
All I need now is to fit it in, extractors, wire it up and the ECU (not sure weather to get an aftermarket or Diamante ECU or source a stock GTO one?)
[TUFFTR]
10-07-2007, 07:09 AM
Dimi you'll be fine running the stock ECU, Although reading KB's post on it, he said diamantes from 91'-93' came out with 202hp, and the 94'+ came out with 220hp, due to an ECU Tweak, so i would try and hunt down a 94'+ Diamante ECU and get that wired in. Also try to get some stock exhaust manifolds from NZ from the 3L diamante to save you Hundreds of $$$ not needed to get them custom made....
Also can you keep me updated? im interested to know how much the shop will be charging to do all of this.
Remember to give it a full overhaul, timing belt, all seals and gaskets too

nice dim, when do you reckon it will be all done by??:D
dimi108
10-07-2007, 08:07 AM
Hey Paula, thanks for that write up. So a 94 Diamante ECU is it? I'm finding it hard to source one even through my overseas mates. How about if I went for an aftermarket computer like a haltech or a power fc? And have it tuned for max power?
I'll keep this DOHC conversion updated with photos and each cost so others can use it as a guide.
I'll do a progress diary on the engine upgrade including good photos this and details on costs of parts and how long it took etc. Then i'll post the write up in the 2nd gen section once it's been all fitted and nicely running then have it stickied. That can be the start of our new DOHC swap guide.
So before I go, just a few things i'd like to clear:
I'll call some wreckers in NZ for Diamante 24 valve extractors and a 94 Diamante ECU. Is that right? And the Diamante ECU will work with all the current wiring from the GTO and the engine etc?
I'm getting it all fitted by Concord Auto's in Strathfield, NSW. Very reputable auto electrician as well so he'll be able to complete most of the conversion.
If anyone else can help with any tips or personal experience with this conversion, that would be greatly appreciated too.

I think a GTO/Stealth/3000GT ECU should work,
From memory probs you might come across are:
Extractors,
A/C
RPM guage (will cut out after certain rev's dues to a difference in wiring set up)
ECU
hoses
Heavy Duty Clutch
Might be missing something.
I'm going to be heading over to Japan or Europe soon hopefully and I'm going to try get my hand on the 30R AWD Diamante.
If I can I will try do what my mates said to bypass being unable to import it. If I own it registered over there for a year apparently I can import over here and register it here, then I will be changing DOHC to DOHC TT.
Let me know how yours goes

If you're getting a half cut, it might be possible to use the exhaust manifolds that are on the motor already. just use the manifolds, and get an exhaust shop to make up the rest. On my ralliart before i went the rpw tuned length extractors, i used the ralliart headers, and had from the headers to the cat made up custom for better flow that the standard setup. im sure something similar can be adapted to your needs

On the GTO Engine im getting it already comes with stock exhaust manifolds and it *looked* like with a few little adjustments it should bolt up...
Dave...Why dont you just import over the AWD running gear?
Would be cheaper to find a rooted TR/TS here ($500???) Do the DOHC Conversion ($2500 roughly) Then slap in the AWD.

Because I think I would more than likely have to get the AWD engineer certified here as no Australian cars where using them and they wouldnt have been checked, would be easier to do it the other way, still has to get checked but should be cheaper and easier to get thru.
not to mention i think there maybe differences for the AWD model structurally which may not seem like much but would be significant

Top idea dave. Hope you can pull it off.
The 30R-SE Diamante are beautiful cars and are the best of the best with the Mitsubishi GTO running gear and AWD and sat nav.
Saw my engine last night. It was pulled out, new timing belt, valve seals, brand new rocker cover and engine was flushed as well. All included in the cost of the front cut purchase ($1500).
Next week it get's dropped in and i'll be visiting the workshop and taking progress snaps and make a progress journal as well for anybody interested in doing the swap :D

Just record it as a voice recording, most phones can do that.. Or you can record it as a video because the new phones record videos (well most) as 3GP which Quicktime can play so just record it, plug the USB cable into your PC and download it to your PC and then get someone (like me) to host it for you.. easy really.. if you count 200 steps as easy :P

My cruise control doesnt work on my manual, maybe you might have more luck with the auto.
Im going to send my car into a auto electrician soon to install a few things and rectify a few things.
My A/C has been disconnected since the conversion, my cruise doesn't work now and I need to fit a Diamante climate and cluster which iv'e had lieing around for some time.
My mate put the cluster in but nothing worked, do you know what needs to be done exactly to get it work?
I noticed your already running that cluster, i'll be very interested to know if the cluster works with the new motor and ecu your presently fitting.
