Thought id give tinting my windows a go this week, here are the results. Excuse the pictures they were taken with my phone.

The side windows are 8% but the back is 35%. I had 8% on the back but i couldnt see anything at night. I got the tint from a shop on ebay,(http://search.ebay.com.au/_W0QQsassZprotintingsuppliesQQhtZ-1) and the rest is history. All it cost was $40 and a bit of my time. So major saving i reckon.

Theres no bubbles it all went on well. In the attached photo the rear looks like it has a bubble, but its condensation. You'd be surprised how easy it really is to do to a magna because of having no window frames.

Its the same tint the shops use, not the crappy stuff you can buy from super cheap or kmart. With this stuff you can buy 100mt of it for the professionals. When you buy cheaper film it comes in pre cut sizes of like 3m and fades or goes purple within a year.

The side windows took about an hour and a half, thats including scraping the windows clean, back one took about 2 hours by it self, i stuffed it up the first time with the 8% so i did it again with 35%.

Nah, your right, its not legal, Front windows must be at least 35%, rears can be what ever.
If you stand about a metre away you cant see anything, not even the seats. But if you look right up close you can. At nights its really dark, it looks like all the powers gone out in town. Not having the rear screen 8% makes a real difference. When i had the 8% on, during the night i couldnt even see the cars behind me, all i could see were little yellow lights. It was really dangerous.

just wondering how hard or invloved it is. I own a 1st gen (yea don't say it) and all the windows have frames, do you think it would be harder to do one??

it would certainly be harder, mainly the cutting would be the issue, like i have only done my car so im no professional, but cutting things straight is a whole lot harder than it looks. With the 3rd gen you can put the blade on a angle and cut around the window, but if you have a frame it might be worth paying someone to do it. Im going to give my vs a go in a few weeks, then i could tell you how hard it is. I reckon i will stuff it up and just not bother.

Other than the edges you would be right, if you take your time anyone can do it. The tint i used is really easy to work with, its nice and thick, and the bubbles just squeegie right out so easy. It would be hard to stuff it up.

Good job and a great effort. Many kudos to you sir

Great job. I did try this once and can remember and perhaps laugh as when commencing the right rear window, just at the point of application and a minor gust of wind comes, wrinkle wrinkle. Then the stress of not enough in the roll because of stuff ups and my rear window at the time was a hatch so upside down for about 1.5 hours. Later I saw a tintmart add or similar showing that they use a heat gun on the film on the outer side first to mould the tint. Never knew this could be done but can you imagine how exciting that would be on your first attempt. Anyway, after my experience hit tintmart last week but could help myself in reply cause I know the effort required. Cheers

I hope you have life insurance. Imagine at night time, you are pulling out of a side street
and someone hurtling down the road with no lights or just the parkers on and slams into
you. Or you hiting a bike rider because you couldn't see through your 8%vlt side windows.

THREEEEEEEEEEEADMIIIIIIIIIIIIIIINE!!!!

I am looking at doing this myself, from the same eBay seller.

- Just wondering, how many metres of tint will I need to comfortably do all windows (minus windscreen obviously)

- Also how hard is it to get out the back windscreen to do the job, can I just pop it back in with some silicon or something? Or should I take out the parcel shelf and tint from the inside with it still in the car.

Cheers!!!

My last car had about 15% and I never had any troubles, I want it to be nice and dark. If I get a defect I can swap my 4 doors with the EI for the inspection lol.

Anyway, can anyone help with my questions? Is dark or silver going to look better on my car?

Incorrect. All windows in a passenger car must be 35% or higher (with the exception of the windscreen).

http://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/NR/rdonlyres/98272D4B-BE1A-403E-AEB3-91EC5DB0E621/0/VSI2.pdf

I've looked up legislation in Queensland and NSW too and its exactly the same.

It can vary from state to state. in sa you can have 35% on drivers and passenger windows and anything behind that can literally be painted black. No tint on front window other than a small stripe at the top.

I am looking at changing my rear doors and rear window to 20% as have 35 on now but want a bit darker.

Wrong. NSW now has recently introduced the law that permits the rear to be as dark as whatever. Reason being is due to the huge amount of imports being registered in NSW and them already being tinted this way. My tinter told me this about 3 months ago. Fronts have to be no less than 35% though.

Note the very specific writing, all windows that provide the driver a view of the road/other road users.
Last time I asked a cop he said 35% front side windows, no tint on the windscreen (except top 10%), any darkness on the rear sides/rear window if the vehicle has 2 side mirrors, as this allows the driver to still see behind them negating the use of the rear windows.

Are you positive? The only document on the RTA website about tinting (click me (http://www.rta.nsw.gov.au/registration/downloads/vsi/vsi03_rev3.pdf)) clearly states that ALL windows on a passenger vehicle have to be 35% (see page 3 of that document). Personally I'd be going off the transport authority's own documents rather than what a tinter told me.

It's a tricky interpretation though. What happens if you're shoulder checking to your left and you're glancing through your rear-left window to obtain a view of other road users? I thought that was the reason why there's a hook to hang a jumper etc on on the right side of the car (on the handle on the roof), but not the left side.

Won't it be too hard to do a good job on the tint, it does have to go on the inside..... Does the parcel shelf come out easily? I am really worried about doing a crap job if I don't have enough room to work with

how do you think the pros do it..... when they did my dads they took the door trims off to do the side windows and they took the back seat + parchel shelf out to do the backone.

No offence but if you are wondering if you need to take out the back window to do your own DIY job then maybe just save the few $100 it costs and save yourself the headache and get the pro's to do it... if you mess it up you WILL regret it.

They do it pretty quickly too... I had mine done while I was working and it was a nice way to end my working day. Some mobs will even pick up your car (within reason)

Thanks for your advice but if the parcel shelf comes out pretty easily then it's a cinch to take the back seat out and do it myself. I can either pay $300-400 (including removal of old tint, and probably glass from the doors as I don't have frameless windows) to get it done for me, or I can pay <$100 for tint and tools and give it a go myself. It's only going to be an absolute max 2-3 hour job and I would rather do that myself and save $300. If it was a 6 hour job I might think twice.....

15% is pretty dark, 5% is overkill.
