Had a bit of a scare yesterday. I had to brake sharply and the drivers seat on my TP sedan slid right forward. I nearly went under the dashboard. As I accelerated again, I nearly ended up in the back seat but fortunately maintained control.

Part of the reason was the seat covers that I recently fitted. Their tie straps were putting slight pressure on the cable of the seat locking mechanism. However even after dealing with that, Im not confident that the fore and aft seat adjustment will hold. The teeth in the rack mechanism are made of plastic and seem to be worn.

If it was the passenger seat, I could lock it in postion with a couple of screws or bolts but the driver's seat needs to be adjustable because I'm about six inches taller than my partner.

Does anyone know whether the driver and passenger seat racks are interchangeable. If so, I could swap them over. Otherwise I will have to buy some from a wrecker and hope that they are better.

Not interchangable, as if you look at the lever location, they are on opposite sides of the seat. I'd just go for a hunt around the wreckers and find a new one there. There are actually a number of other first gen models that have better looking seats than the standard TP anyway if I remember right...

I'm sorry but thats the funniest thing i've read in a while!!! I'm just imagining a car driving past with someone flying around in the cabin frantically trying to control their car!

Yeah, but seriously I'd take that to get fixed ASAP

I'd love elite seats if they were in top condition and a matching colour (brown), but that is probably a hard ask. The interior of my sedan is almost like new, although only a "poverty pack" executive. I would not want to downgrade it by putting in grubby seats. Yesterday I also broke a tail-light (it was a bad day), so I have to go to Mitsibits anyway on Monday. I will check out what seats they have while I'm there.

Unlatched seats can be quite deadly. I heard of it happening years ago in a light aircraft. The pilot had not latched the seats properly. When he took off and the nose tilted upwards, he and the seat slid down the rails towards the back. Of course he had hold of the control column which got pulled back, causing the plane to climb even steeper. It stalled and crashed.

Will second or third gen seats fit? Jeez that would look pretty sweet if they did :)

Also seats should only be about $50.

That said, some wreckers charge ridiculous prices. Might be better off picking up a spare car, seems a lot of 1st gens are going for $200-400!

OT, is it me or are used-car prices getting ridiculous? A few years ago I could never find anything under about $2K, now you can pick up a 10yr-old car for less than that, and anything older is practically being given away!

Well, I got a torch and looked carefully under the seat and this is the problem. Two one-dollar coins have fallen into the catch. The rack is not plastic after all, but steel. However the coins are stopping the catch from engaging fully in the rack. I've just spent the last hour trying to get them out and can't budge them, so I will have to take the seat out.

To Rogue_Streak: Mitsibits is a local wrecker specialising in Mitsubishis. They want $50 for the tail light. There is someone on eBay selling brand new reproduction front corner lights (parker and blinker) at about $49.95 for a pair. I might ask whether they also have tail lights.

I had the same problem a while ago, turned out to be an old fuse stuck in the rack. Buggered if I know how it jumped off the floor and landed there!!

I've seen plenty of 1st gen tail lights on ebay for virtually nothing...

Know that feeling. 2 yrs ago i had to hunt to find my magna for $1400. Then since owning it i have been given 3 cars and bought one for $100. Heaps of cheap 80's cars out there now for under 500 bucks that ppl have just given up on. I think they think it's easyer to buy new then fix up there old car.

The rack is not plastic after all, but steel.I was going to say, seemed strange that such a crucial component would be made of plastic! (Not that all plastics are weak, in fact most are anything but, it's the cheap fillers that weaken them...)

To Rogue_Streak: Mitsibits is a local wrecker specialising in Mitsubishis.Ah, sorry, misread it as saying you were going to a dealer.
