Ever since I've begun tinkering with my new TL, I've been researching EGR. From what I understand it was introduced somewhere around the TH-TJ series, and it was standard fitment to all Magnas and Veradas. Various sources quote various benefits and disadvantages; more efficient combustion, lowered emissions of oxides of nitrogen, and on the other hand, reduced intake charge density (ie. a hotter intake charge), incomplete combustion, increased concentrations of particulate matter.

While I understand that it's entirely intended as an emissions control system, I'd like to know where I stand in regards to disabling/removing it. I'm sure the EPA wouldn't be too impressed though, as they love all things vehicular. I do feel sometimes that it's quite annoying, as the engine feels quite grumpy when the EGR is active.

I've heard of/seen various designs of extractors that have the provision for EGR; has anyone had the system reconnected after getting aftermarket headers bolted on? Has anyone disconnected it from a stock installation? Do you prefer the engine with or without it?

Thanks in advance guys.

i have them stainless extractors forgot the brnd lol

and the egr is connected, it was more work to disconnect it than just connect it up..

the epa will go greekstyle on ya if they were to find out blah blah blah.... if there i was 1kw to be gained by not running it and it was easy enough, out it would come though

So it's really not worth mucking around with? It's just that the car feels like a slug when the EGR is running. Does the valve get dirty quickly?

DIY gasket kit and just forget to make a hole.....

At the moment I'm looking into a front to back exhaust replacement and EGR is the big sticking point. The extractors I've seen have the provision for the EGR, but the hole isn't drilled.

my EGR went bye bye when i got the RPW massive manifold. all i did at the time was cut the pipe from my exhaust manifold, filled it with maniseal, bent i over itself a few times and hit it flat with a hammer to stop any leaks. When the supercharger was installed, they just left off all the egr crap, which now sits on a shelf in my garage (nice piece of machine alloy mind u)

Dave from RPW did tell me once the gains of it, as far as i understand its mainly for cold starts to warm up the intake manifold to get the engine to running temp or something like that

Like most people, I disabled the EGR when I got aftermarket extractors fitted, but when I returned my original (auto) TJ to stock - I got the exhaust shop to leave the EGR disconnected. My missus now drives this car - and it is essentially factory stock standard in the engine department with the exception of having the EGR disabled.

I'm convinced that this car has consistently better fuel economy now than when I originally had it factory stock standard. It's pretty much always on about 11.4L/100km and if my memory serves me right - it always used to be around the low 12's when I first got the car.

egr doesnt operate when power is needed it only operates when high speed crusing so you wont feel any differance AT ALL.

just leave alone you will not gain anything.

if you dont beleve me this is straight from the mitsu manual
