View Full Version : I need to borrow a TCU (in Brisbane)...

Greetings all,

I have some major problems with my freshly rebuilt TP transmission. The problem occurred after the alternator gave out, and is probably owing to a voltage sag to the TCU...

Anyways, I have removed said TCU, opened and inspected it. Everything looks intact so, unless it's one of the IC's that have gone to lunch, I can't see a problem (and can't, at any rate, see how anything could logically get "blown" by a voltage sag - spike, yes... but not a sag...).

I'm wondering whether anyone might happen to have a known good TCU sitting around that I could borrow for a day or two to test with. If the transmission comes good, I know it *is* the TCU at fault - if not, I keep looking for the culprit (perhaps one of the sensors on the box?).

It's a damn pity it's not the same unit Mitsu fitted to the TM/N, as I have one of those sitting here doing nothing useful :-/

Anyone?

Cheers,
Mattt.

Matt,

There is no need to swap TCUs to find out if it has a problem. Its self-diagnostics can tell you. Do a search for the thread I started here under the heading "Does the TCU in a TP have diagnostics." Amongst all the waffle, you should find a few clues, such as where the diagnostic connector is. If you just get regular pulses from the TCU, there are no problems. If you get no pulses from it at all, it is cactus, stuffed, dead, gone to heaven. In any other case, you will need to interpret the error codes that it pulses out. They are the same as for the 2nd Gens, for which the workshop manual is downloadable from this forum. I forget where, but someone will know.

Is the carb TCU the same as the EFI one?

Yeah - I'll look into that before I try a replacement... Had forgotten the TCU had diags...

I've established (thanks, Stagma :-)) that the carb TCU is not the same as the EFI one...
