So i was talking to someone in Autobahn today and he was saying that i should put a "hot dog exhaust" on my stock TR.

I just have a couple of quick questions..

What are they? (Pic maybe?)
What pro's/con's do they have?
And are they easily fitted?

I currently have a cracked muffler, so i was thinking of changing it over anyway.

Any help is appreciated guys!

Cheers. :D

Autobarn - ricer morons who will try and slap a cannon on any car or pushbike.

they are those big exhausts you see on the honda civic's and jap cars and TUFFTR :D

If you have a manual 4cyl they dont sound too bad but if you have an auto go with something different they just drone too much

I wouldn't get a cannon from autobarn. they're somewhat overpriced, then you have to take it to an exhaust place if you don't know how to weld. you'll end up paying a heap for labour anyway, just go down to an exhaust place and get em to slap a staright-through muffler for ya. mine's a semi-straight through, so it doesn't drone when cruising, but barks at ya when ya bury the right toe. depends what you're looking for.

P.S- I paid 180 for mine fitted at dandy exhausts on cheltenham road, ring them up see if you can get a price.

A hotdog muffler is/should be used in conjuction with a sports muffler as the hotdog is just a piece of flared up pipe which cuts the noise out just a little bit more.

Using a hotdog on its own in an exhaust system will make it way too loud.

Just go for a system with one single sports muffler, then if you think its too loud, then add a hotdog. If its still too loud for you, then replace the hotdog with a resonator which is a 'mini' muffler.

a hotdog muffler is also know as a resonator and it does what the name says it removes resonance- google it!!!!!! it has nothing to do with cannons or flamethrowers (it would of come up some where:nuts: ) Magnas or/well V6 KR have a resonator/hotdog standard. A muffler removes only a centain frequance depending of course on size brand etc. but only through a centain range thats what a hotdog/resonator comes in as it works in a range a muffler does not. please excuse the spelling as i was writing this in out rage of incorect information.....

Edit: i do agree with the uslessness of autobahn, rice rice rice next they will be selling pressure cookers. hahahahaha well i thought it was funnny. been a long day oooooooooookkkkkkkkk!!!

its just not a piece of flared pipe, but i do understand it can be hard to slam a piece of steel through your usb port to show someone on the otherside.

Here's a previous discussion about hotdogs...http://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/showthread.php?t=44284&highlight=hotdog

Was that 180 for the muffler + work?

Do you have any pictures of the muffler/exhaust now?

Cheers guys for all the input! :)

yep, 100 for the muffler itself, plus 80 for the twin exit tip i opted for. if only I knew how to record sound and chuck it on here. i'll post a pic soon, just cant be bothered right now =P

Hotdog is jsut a straight flow resonator to keep it in compliance with the sound stuff with RTA.

Had it with my older car. dampens the noise but u still got the grunt

No, they aren't that different, the only difference between a "hotdog" resonator and a "cannon" resonator is the outlet size.

Contrary to what you believe, a hotdog isn't the technical term for it, an inline resonator (hotdog) is also called a baffle and uses the same technique for sound wave muting as the cannon resonator.

Resonators... Baffles... Mufflers... Cannons... Hotdogs... Learn the lingo mate.

if ur after a hot dog slip in (which is just a tube insert in your stock muffler) they sound pretty good. similar to removing a baffle...well not sure if cars have baffles but motor bikes do... ANYWAY ....our mechanics here buy and install them for about 70 bucks.....makes v8s sound great.....never herd them on a 6

would replacing an S bend redback muffler with a straight through sports muffler make it louder without the ricey tinny sound?

i already got a resonator on the system, just want something that sounds a bit louder and better, no rice rice baby

Yeah they are different, cause even though you say they kill the noise the same way, they still produce different levels of sound, and im not talking about milo tin cannon bulls**t. I should know as ive fitted both before and the hotdog mutes the sound only a fraction whereas the resonator mutes it too much for my liking.

Ok... while im sure there is 100 different terms for resonators, and im sure you will point out some big resonator from japan that comes with a fully sick sticker to place on the side guard that sounds just as loud as a hotdog, i am only new to learning about rice burners and such, so go easy, as im not really interested in sh**ty looking milo tins, im talking about your stock standard reso and the well known 'hotdog' that many people know as basically a straight through muffler with minimal sound deadening......

Cheers!!!

I don't think anyone should be interested in Milo can exhausts lol I know I'm not, I have a straight through Mercury muffler with a baffle (hot dog) because I wanted it quieter. All a learning process sir :)

Gah you all SUCK.

Go to an exhaust shop and get a resonator and LOOK AT IT WITH YOUR EYES and then look inside a straight through CANNON MUFFLER - They are chalk and cheese yet FOOLS mix them up because they're IDIOTS and frankly I'm surprised they can feed and dress themselves.

Any baffle that I have known about - talking mufflers or not, is a addition not a whole muffler, say a sump baffle, is a piece of aluminum/steel welded into the sump with holes in it (ala swiss cheese) to try to stop your oil pump from oil surge (just like petrol) this is used in drag and drift cars that are hi-po and are constantly revving their metal boobies off. Same thing with petrol tanks, catch cans, air/oil separators, radiator overflow tanks and anything else you think you'd want to stop surge in. As well as with motorcycle exhausts, you can insert baffles into the exit to reduce noise. Same with Cannon mufflers, you can insert the baffle to reduce noise as it turns it from a eg 2" in 5" out to a 2" in 2" out.

Calling a resonator or a barrel muffler a baffle is WRONG. A baffle is an insert, a cannon muffler is a muffler with the exit being 4" etc.. a barrel muffler is the same as an oval muffler but round instead of oval and a 'hotdog' or resonator is what looks to be a small cannon or barrel muffler, however the inside is completely different and is somewhat like an intestine with dimples and rippled inside surface area to mix airflow and with a special coating to absorb resonance, hence the name RESONATOR. Mufflers have a glass or stainless/mild steel wool pack that absorbs the sound, split the two open and it's like a tomato and an apple. InsaneReaper, the guy must be saying either your car is/will be too loud or is a knob, the latter is more likely because at my local Autobarn is the guy from big brother last season who was trying to lead on that gay country guy. He knows about as much about cars, car audio, modification and performance as i do about gay love.

http://web.aanet.com.au/naa/muff.jpg
See inside the big red square? that's more like a baffle and that's what the inside tubing of any muffler is like, either little holes or longer oval holes and they let the air soaked with sound waves get into the packing and remove it whilst also removing resonance.

If you want to know anything about a modification you're performing, ask a reputable member here or CALL a big name shop that does said mods. Simple, then you don't get kids confusing you with misinformation. THE END >>
