Hi, first post!
Wondered if anubody would have an idea what is the problem with my motor?
Basically it lost its drive whilst doing 100kph in cruise control.
Engine still runs with only a slight ticking noise from the auto gbox area, so I presume it wont be the flex plate otherwise it would be making a noise big time!
No forward or reverse gears can be obtained.
No warning lights came on.
Drive shafts still attched and in one piece.
A guy at an auto gbox place said a common fault on these is a clip coming adrift in the box and making its way to the pump and causing damage.
If anybody has had a similar problem and hopefully with a cheaper fix I am all ears!
Thanks

torque converter or oil pump failure
possibly from the wrong oil being used in the box
a clogged oil filter
inside the box the bands and friction plates wont be pretty
take the pan off the auto yourself see what is attached to the magnets on the pan
make sure mitsubishi auto oil is used and a new filter and gasket
a clip failing ... first time I ever heard of that
how many km on the box ?

Well its been a long time but my son has finally got the money together to get his box checked out.
Phoned up last week a local auto gbox specialist.
I asked what could the max price be for the worst senario?
$2,500 for everything, parts labour gst
Ok, I was hoping it could end up something cheaper but my lad had a $2,500 bank loan to cover the worst senario.
Yesterday got a call - Its not looking good! The pump has gone and passed a load of debris etc - Wait for it....
Its now going to cost $3,500
Gee was I a happy chappy.
He then said somebody else must have quoted me the $2,500 and they cant fix it for that price!
This guy is recommended by the RAC!
I phoned a local competitor of his quoting what the likely damage is and he said the worst senario would be $2,400 for everything.
The problem now is that the vehicle is in pieces and would be impossible to get it to the other place.
Anybody else get ripped off like this?
Going down on monday to get him to explain how the cost has suddenly risen by a 1,000 bucks!

if you go down on monday and he gives you a lame BS answer go to the ACCC. Did he happen to give you a written quote beforehand by any chance?

have you tried a mitsu dealer. My dad got a factory recond unit fitted for $2100 with 2 year warranty. the clutch packs were gone in it(oil turned black). it didn't even have failsafe anymore. They got a tow truck to take it in.

^^^
Yeah the Mitsubishi genuine recon boxes arent as expensive as you would think. I remember seeing the price a while ago at around $1600 before labour. I think its listed as a 5 hour job so labour would be around 500.

Or go to the wreckers and get one and get them to install that

Big mistake not getting the quote written down, but thought if I had pushed for that then the job would have definitely cost $2,500 even if it was something simple, so took the wrong gamble.
What gets me the other specialist around the corner know exactly what the damage is when the pump goes and they said it wouldnt come to no more than $2,400.
I did get a quote for a recon from Repco and they want $2,800 plus shipping from the East.
The mob I am with are supposed to be the best in the area so I cant see the parts coming to so much, so think they are trying to cream 2 grand in labour off us.
Think I will ask for a complete breakdown of the whole job eg Labour rate per hour, parts etc, and take it from there, if I cant get the price knocked down.
Will pass on this to the Auto Trades Assoc and the RAC.
The latter is the only reason I took it there in the first place!

Yeah its the overdrive spring clip that comes loose and gets into the pump. :doubt:

stop the guy working on your old box it has had its day
as [TUFFTR] says
go find another auto box from a wrecker
but and have the current mechanic put it in saves extra towing expense
if the mechanic was decent he should have offered one from a wrecker as one option for you
work like that needs a written quote or you do leave yourself open to rips

After a bit of a sob story etc, got them to accept $2,800 cash.
Basically part of the plate assembly went through the pump, breaking the gear up, and also doing damage to the casing.
Plates also burnt out.
Got a few other estimates - one was $3,200.
Found out it is an 8 1/2 hour job to re/re gbox.
Wreckers wanted $1,000 for a box, but who knows what could be wrong with them?
Thanks for your interest and help!
