Hey guys, ever since I got my car I have noticed that when I change from first gear to second gear in tippy it gives a fairly large jolt as it goes in. But it only does this when I'm going hard, like above 4,500 revs. And it doesnt do it when its running in drive. Any ideas what this might be? is it a problem? It doesnt bother me that much, jsut a bit annoying. Also it is only for first to second, all other gear changes are fine.

I have a 2003 TJ

in reply to Matt... check your automatic transmission fluid (ATF). the procedure is in your owner's manual. I recently noticed a little up-rev in shifts, checked my ATF and it was low. grabbed some fluid and topped it up (it took about 800mls) and it's much better now!

on a side note, I couldn't find when the FWD auto transmission is meant to be serviced? all of the service notes say to check the fluid, but none of them say to change it???

in reply to binzer... yeah, your brother is wrong. you should also put your auto into N if you're going to be sitting at the lights for any extended period (i.e. more than about 30 seconds). it puts less stress on the torque converter and drive line in general.

cheers,
.wook

EDIT: if you do top up your ATF yourself, make sure you get the right fluid. I used Castrol TQ-STM which meets Mitsu's SP3 requirements.

it's pretty spendy when you flush your whole transmission (8.4 litres). I paid $15 at Autobarn for a litre, but 4 litres was around $45.

Genuine Mitsubishi SP3 ATF - $30 for 5L, get it from the dealerships, way cheaper than th castrol stuff.

in regads to the tippy. i don't know about mitsus, but the tippy in the XR6T and the Calais-V both jolt when it's being given heaps. (Calais-V less, seeing as it's a newer and more refined box). I think it's just the tranny trying to guess whe the best shift point is or something. I wouldn't be too worried unless you're getting a full neck-breaking jolt. then it may be that you're low on tranny fluid or other stuff said on here

the INVECS 'box is probably the second best auto 'box I've ever driven (best if you don't count the DSG from my VW). mine has always been smooth through shifts (except when I needed a little fluid), and that includes full power shifts at maximum revs. if it ever started to jolt, I would have it checked out asap.

hehe...I don't have a 3rd gen, so I wouldn't know about the smoothness of the 'box. I know my TR box is a pig when downshifting. I've personally driven the two mentioned, and that's what I've found. then again, they're different makes.

better go with what everyone else says.

hmm checked the tranny fluid... its suppose to be between the two lines with hot inbetween them yeah? Well thats where it is so I guess that isnt the problem. It's not a neckbreaking jolt but it is very noticeable. All the other gears change so smoothly.

My 2003 TJ AWD does the same thing...if your accellarating through the rpm and change...u wont get a jolt, if you slow your accellaration down or hold it at a high rpm...u'll get a jolt. Not sure y this is tho. (my trannie fluid is at the rite level to coz i checked it)
