Don't like the sounds of this older article, especially in light of the very minor series 3 update.
I suppose we will know for sure come November this year (last of the 3 dates nominated for an official announcement re shutdown of Tonsley Park plant). All seems to be going towards this plan though, with the 'carryon as if business as usual'.

It is a pity that more people don't buy Australian, as they will be the first to whinge when the economy slows and unemployment rises!!

Look up the media watch report on this (abc diss'n itself:bowrofl:). Basically, this same store it trotted out every 2-3 years, some word for word. It was a total beat up. Oh, better prepare for the wave of abuse for bring this up again too.

Why prepare for abuse. Isn't the forum here to discuss things maturely and frankly whether we like what the discussion is about or not? And this report is only from 9 months ago, not the original doom and gloom ABC report, that was heavily criticised prior to the 380 being launched!!!

Look I am as much a magna/380 fan as anyone, though just probably as frustrated and somewhat disappointed as many others on here at present.

Well guess time will tell, I just hope it is a beat up, but think people are being naive if they think there is absolutely no basis to this purely because MMAL deny it. Read the whole report!!!!

Think we need to discuss this maturely, and keep the emotions out of it, especially in light of the somewhat disappointing series 3 model due for release next week.

Part I don't like is that the report was leaked from MMAL itself, and that MMAL's current CEO McEniry who only took over 18 months ago is mentioned as the project leader for this plan.
May be much clearer now the reason for his takeover as CEO.

The fact is that for years people have been saying "The plant will be closed and mitsubishi will be no more" and it just hasn't happened. I don't see them closing down a plant that they've only just invested millions of dollars in to make one of the most advanced factories in Australia. Mitsubishi Australia might be well under target for sales, but they're not losing money.

Point taken about the huge investment made into the factory, but this can be offset in other ways.

I think that people are forgetting that sure MMAL is making money, but this is on the strength of its imports which selling very well. This money is being used to make up for the huge losses they have made, and are continuing to make on 380. MMC I'm sure will not continue to tolerate 380 losses. If 380 goes then MMAL's profits in imports look even more impressive. Remember 380 was a car that was forecast to sell atleast 30,000 a year. It is now selling on average 900 a month........:(

380 HAS to lift sales, and to do that it needed a much more substantial update then what series 3 looks to offer to even become competitve with its competition, let alone remaining competitive when they all release their updated models.

Pretty much what Ford had to do from AU Falcon to BA Falcon. They were recording big losses to, but they new if they wanted Falcon to stay around that is what had to happen.

For anyone to believe that 380 will continue to hang around at 900 sales a month, unfortunately needs to stop and smell the roses. It is a pity cause I feel for the guys at MMAL who did such a good job, with very very limited resources. Heard they are now just sitting around with not much to do, waiting for the official announcement!

Wait for the new model 380, might be awhile off, but i've heard rumours that MMAL may be helping with the design of the new galant, which means they can get it right from the start. If they cease 380 production locally, i reckon they'll use the plant to build a different vehicle, perhaps the new lancer/pajero and export them.

Only time will tell.
One thing i've learnt about the car industry is, don't believe a car company is going to shut up shop until it happens :).

Nice rumour, pity the design depeartment has less than 20 people left in it, not sure how much input we will have on a new design. As for a different vehicle, MMC will be setting up a new plant in Russia purely for Lancer production, and the Pajero has gone to China. Unlikely MMAL will be getting anything that can be exported, especially with the rise in the Aussie dollar.

What's the feeling from those forum members that work at MMAL???

They probably have more of an idea then any of us about where this is heading.....

I read somewhere that the 380 doesnt take off it is the end of mmal. 12 months to prove itself.
That would be bad for AUS.

how can you have no doubt? it may be a good car, but its far too little too late. a big heavy, powerful fwd car isn't that alluring for most. plus the fact they have said there will be no discounts and not many will buy it at RRP. the engine is nothing great for its size. the boot is too small. for the price of the base 380 i'd much rather have a accord euro, or a mazda6.

After just watching the news and what Phillips had to say about the 380 I can't see it lasting... Seems to me that they have soon become negative about the car even though they just released it, maybe dealer feedback is negative??

It has alot against it with Ford and Holden at the moment, Fords new BF Falcon is a screamer with the new Six Speed German auto along with 190kw's standard.

I really thought Mitsubishi could have done better with the model lineup, the sports models just aren't agreesive enough, and the base model looks terrible.. :(

i could go on, but seriously all this crap has just been re-posted from pre-release of the 380, to release of s1 and s2, and now s3... enough is enough guys, getting sick of reading it! give it a rest and if it happens, it happens, theres no need to predict if a company is going down the toilet or not. if u like the car/brand, tell people, if not then buy something else. dont pass this so called 'info' round that they will close, or else u could make MMAL lose out on a few sales just based on that word of mouth alone.

just give it a break already, me and anyone else who has been here since 2005 has read and re-read all this crap to death, and its just getting annoying.
