Not to gainsay anything that Mitsiman has on the RPW web site but I was talking tot eh guy from DPCramer who ran my car on his 4WD Dyno and he was extolling the first mod to go for should be the piggy back. his reasons were pretty logical:

1) Tune the Stock engine to a better tune (you can't tune modern car engines as the ECU is fixed and there are no little screws to change stuff anymore)

2) As each mod is added then we can tune again for that mod.

Now at approx $1250 for a piggy back install, dyno run and tune that is one of the most expensive mods but then allows best benefits from any of the other ones that you put on.

Anyones elses comments about this? I thought that perhaps putting it on last might help because all of the others will make the car breathe, accelerate and idle better whilst the ECU tries to accomodate but once they are all on you might as well tune the engine to match them all.

I'm no expert, but i think he said that so he can make more money because you'll keep coming back.

It's only my opinion, but I find that a lot of mechanics/workshops try to rip off Magna/Camry drivers, they sterotype us for not knowing what's going on.

Good luck.

I'd be wary of having to tune the Unichip everytime a mod is added. It's a neat idea to get the Unichip now and cool to have a gain straight away but you'll probably put it out of whack when doing other mods before getting it retuned. I was told it was $150 per tune so it starts to add up. Besides, the gain from the chip will be more beneficial after several mods.

Ans some current cars can be reprogramed. Some of the Commodores can have their chips tuned without having to use a piggyback chip.

I agree, what this guy has said will be very expensive!

Do a number of fairly cheap mods like exhaust, CAI, extractors and so on, then get the piggy back and it then. Otherwise the whole process is gonna cost at least $500 more.

You'll be forking out for a tune each mod you do. Waste of money and time.

Do the basic mods, intake, exhaust/extractors, throttle body and then do the ecu.

Also remember the Magna ECU is a learning ecu to an extent, so it will adjust and learn the new capabilities of the mods you have put on, it tunes itself so-to-speak.

So dont waste your money as he obviously wants you to do.

Agree with the other guys. All mods first, then chip.

Yep, do your basic stuff first, then the chip.

My god - educated magna owners who actually read and listen.

But yes I totaly agree the reason why we suggest the piggy back last ist that all of the easy bolt on mods the factory computer with the MAF sensor can compensate for to around 85% of the potential gains from that bolt on item.

This is the strength of the Mitsubishi MAF system. Do this to a MAP sensor car and you have to do computer mods very early as it has no way to read air flow volume and compesnate for it.
