Hey all,

I just installed the replacement rocker cover from the wreckers. Spent 90 minutes cleaning the surfaces, removing old blue RTV gasket sealant, adjusted my new torque wrench to 6.5nm and tightened the bolts. After a 10 minute drive I inspected for leaks none at the contact surfaces apparent but to my dismay I find a hairline crack near the left bolt, where my other broken rocker cover also has a similar hairline crack. F*ck...I shoved on some blue RTV around that hairline crack after cleaning it and hope it will bodgy it up for a while.

I found this rocker already removed from a TR magna at the wrecking yard and naively thought I got it easy and removed that rocker cover and purchased it for $35. I think I know why that rocker cover was removed. Some else removed it and noticed the crack and left the bloody thing there for some other fool like me to take it. At that wrecking yard there was only one EFI 2.6 Astron, the others were GLX's with carburettors and I dont really want to use a rocker cover from one of those. I will keep this rocker cover, if I can keep the hairline crack from leaking so my question is...will the blue RTV work long term or should I be sensible and go to the wreckers before the 30day warranty period to get a replacement rocker cover from a GLX magna?

P.S. I think its time to get another car. Are the 3rd generation magna any good on fuel economy and are the as reliable if not more than the 2nd generation magna's?

Thanks,
Rauli

That's bad luck, isn't it. Will they refund after you admit you installed it and applied the RTV?:doubt:

Here's a fuel economy thread from the 3rd gen section...http://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/showthread.php?t=35083
Maybe look around there to see what sort of problems people have had.

Mate thats just bad luck i reckon....
Take it back, and througholy inspect any others they have there....i actually prefer the black RTV silicone and i know the aviation stuff is just awesome...
the blue one ehhhh once you use the black one, well, once youve had black you wont go back lol..

Thanks for the prompt reply. Thats a good question...I am not the sort of person to lie (often anyway) but perhaps I should call them and ask but considering they are a business they will use any excuse to avoid a refund or exchange. I did read they warranty policy and they stated a faulty component within 30 days after purchase can be exchanged.

I have to use the RTV on the hairline crack to minimise leaks while I drive it. If I need to replace the RTV on that crack every 6 months, that is tolerable for me.

Rauli

Even if it is another $35, rather be safe then sorry.
Im sure if your nice enough about it and dont get a total prick at the wreckers they should swap it around for you.
Hell paint it while its off too:D

The carby rocker cover will still work on yours, with the only difference really being that it has some bolt threads sticking out the top instead of the way the EFI one is, where there are just holes left over. The other difference is that the PCV valve is different, but could easily be swapped over with your current one, or if you know an aftermarket spare parts place that has things like PCV valves, you could pick up a brand new one (I got a new one for $19, which works perfectly!). The cover I've had running in mine is a carby one, and I haven't had a single problem with it.

Thanks for the offer but I think the postage will be nearly as high as buying another one.

Rightio. Ill contact the wreckers and see if they will honour the exchange. For now i did use the blue RTV generously on the small hairline crack and it appears to be working. Funnily enough yesterday after I installed a new oxygen sensor...there was a rush of oil and smoke from oil landing on the exhaust. Sigh. Then I checked it later on and the oil leak does not seem to be there anymore...:doubt: I really need another car.

Thanks,
