Any tips on building a box for a Subwoofer. id rather go ported. the sub i am building it for is a 12" MTX Audio 9500 (T129544) DVC (dual 4Ω). It will be wired in parallel up for a 2Ω. the amp running it is an alpine MRV-1507. i was thinking about an 80L box. anyone know of any good programs that can calculate vlume for the box?

I'm also in the process of possibly making my own sub-box. I'm looking for twin ported sub boxes though, to accomodate two 12" subs. Anyone able to help us out?

Both of you - you should of got a data sheet with the Sub that would tell you what the ideal box and port size is.
if not, Look on MEA for the box enclosure calculator.
For beginners, i would go a sealed box.
A ported box is alot of hassle...

I was given the sub for free off a mate who...don;t know why, one day he rocked up at my place and gave me an almost brand new sub!

*EDIT*- I'm going to make the box and get my cousin (who's experienced with these things) to port it for me. just need to know basics on how to make it.
what's MEA?

Ig you go to the manufactures website (if its a recent model) they should have the spec sheet listed.
if not do a google search, everythings on the net these days lol.
The ports not hard to make, Either some PVC tubing for a round port or make a box out of MDF for a slot port, its the tuning of it which is hard in relation to the box.
And unless you wanna enter DB comps its really not worth it.

I was always under the impression if you had more power you'd run a ported box.
As when you have a sealed box the pressure inside increases and decreases with the cone moving in and out pushing it or pulling it more....with a ported box it just takes air when it needs it and doesnt really get helped....i havent been in touch with audio for a while...Read up on MEA its a top site

You'll have to buy one pretty much suited to your sub though, so GL lol.
If you were THAT KEEN on porting it, do your research and find out how much space you have to work with in the boot, then work out how many L that is (W x D x H) and from there find out how much space you have left for a port..
when i did mine, i had 2 x 12"s between the strut towers and the only way i could 90mm ports in is if i had the face on a pretty major angle. All in all i had one ugly looking sub box.

that took up your entire boot :P

OP: just go sealed mate, its much easier and will sound better

Depends on how good you are after it to sound really. By porting a sub box you generally get bout 3 more dbs from it but it can really compromise the SQ if done even slightly wrong. Sealed boxes are eaiser to make but depending on the volume of the box you may have to brace it internally as well.

Generally if you make a sealed box it has to be alot bigger than a ported box to get the right resonance. Audio companys spend lots of time and effort to build a box suited for their subs. Look at the alpine R-series sub and box combo, if you make a sealed box for that it would take up near all of the boot it would be that big so it is ported and now is in a quite small box (bit more to it than that like angles and distances from wall to walls etc. but basically thats it)

as you sub it also a powerful duel voice coil sub i would think that you would have to port the box simply because the sealed box will be too big. but you need lots of info bout the sub to do it right, what box size you need, what the resonance frequency of the sub is, how deep should you make the box etc.

Errr... I stand to be corrected, but sealed boxes as a rule of thumb are generally much smaller, hence their advantage and popularity for car audio.
The bas in a sealed box isn't quite as deep, and unless the ported box is very well designed and built sealed boxes tend to be more accurate and musical.

yes sealed boxes are smaller and in fact ported boxes can get quite big depending on the sub.

Is 80L too big or too small?
What do the specs say?
A sub that big would need quite a large box, 80L seems like a lot but hey i'm using 35L specced subs that aren't anywhere near the size of that thing :P.

Exactly the size of his sub would be moving so much air. It would be like 3 Of those sonys he has. I think 80L sounds about right.

80L sounds about right. To design a GOOD ported box, the size is generally very big.
