hey guys got myself a magna again.... from a TJII to a TL...
today is my first day of having it.. and when the car is cold the auto seems to be in neutral even when i am in D or R. i have to press on the acc before it engage itself into D or R... but once its warmed up its 100% noraml... any idea on the problem guys?
anyway the transmission fluid was like brand new red... so i was wondering if the previous owner changed the transmission fluid with some doggy ones? some mates were saying that the gear might be slipping but i doubt so as it only does that when its cold. by the way got myself a TL 2003 magna with 65Ks on the clock.

Cheers

Hey mate.

I'm not really sure exactly what could be wrong. But aybe change the transfluid. The previous owner may have put the wrong type of fluid in thus making the trans play up. There's no harm in trying. All it can do is the same thing! If it goes away... problem solved!

wait till it gets warm
cycle the gears leave in park
leave engine running
and check fluid level...should between the two lines

always use mitsubishi auto fluid

hrm.. not too sure buddy. Just read back and you said it was your first day of ownership?! If you bought it from a dealership or somehting like that go and kick their ass and ask em wtf. Even if you bought it privately, speak to them and say what happened?! You sold me a dud.

Best thing is to get a mechanic/transmission specialist to look at it.

yeah its mu first day of ownership... i would seriously want to kick someone's ass real hard....
ok the car has been towed to my mechanic and will onli know the answer tom...
so u reckon i should bring the car to:
- mitsu dealers
- mechanic
- transmission specialist

lol i know its probably a coinsedence (sp?) but couln't help laughing.

the oil u changed didn't smell funny did it?

try just runing the gears through the gate, take ur foot off the brake and see if it take up, if it doesn't try disconnecting ur battery an when reseting the ecu via the mode button make sure u select auto, see if that helps.

if that dnt help, after checking shaft sensores probably needs to be pulled apart and inspected to find the problem, but could just be the selector, i remeber the flashing N happening to me once but can't remember what the problem was i just played with the selctor.

bit hard to determin on a online forum best bet would be to call up the ppl u bought the car of, ask em if it ever happened to them, tell them ur gonna take it to mitsu to get fixed and ur posting them the bill.

good luck.

if the oil level is correct

torque converter or oil pump failure

whould be the only thing left stopping the box

they can pressure test the automatic and reset computers

did u buy it from a dealer or private?
the auto would be covered under a stat warenty if sold by a dealer

:stoopid: and if you bought it privately you got either got sold an absolutely dud or you flogged it too hard just after getting it. Either way man I'd be busting skulls.

Did the TL get the 5/10 warranty?

If so, if all else fails you could always lever off that.

The 4 spd Auto box is probably the worst feature of the 3 gen series. The ratios are all wrong for any impulsive spurt of performance and sometimes it wont even kick down when you ask it to (and I always say please....you stupid ****er of a car!) lol

Seriously though, The car has only travelled quite low kms so I think the previous owner knew exactly what was wrong with it, hence the sale. I wonder if theres any sawdust in it too?

2003 TL's didn't get the 5/10 warranty. Started in 2004.

3 year/100 thousand K. Even if it did have the sweet 5/10 warranty, the 10 year powertrain warranty only covers the original owner.

You're not wrong there mate. The other mistake that Mitsu made was to omit the transmission filter (I think it was from TJ on?)... The fluid that came out of my trans looked like engine oil. Thank god there are companies out there that make remote filter kits...

Mum's KL 5sp doesn't have a filter... It must be model specific?

This is the exact same problem that happened to my car. I throught it was the gearbox but I complained to my husband that I was losing water in the radiator any way we realised the thormastat was not opening and so I replaced it and it hasn't skiped a beat since. It basically was getting hot and shutting down. So you could give it a go I think off the top of my head It cost me $50.00.

My expertise is in FORD 6's so I did my research before buying my TL Magna & the only negative that kept coming up in reviews was the 4 speed auto. I am going to fit a cooler soon & I always have the auto oil dropped im my cars every 20k. I am concerned if it doesn't have a filter though!!

the mechanic told me to prepare myself for the worst as he thinks that there isnt any good in the transmission... any recommendation on where to get an auto?? located in Brisbane... mechanic quoted me 1650 for the transmission and 2600 for including installs....
sob sob sob... starting to loose faith in a magna...

Its an internal filter.

dude, was it a private sale or a dealer sale.

either way, theres a certain thing called fair trading. if whoever you bought it off doesnt want to pay for it, bring the car to them. obviously this sort of thing doesn't happen over night, the previous owner must have known about it.

this isn't fair at all. don't lose faith in magnas, they're all good on the inside...i swear!

there was an option for owners of cars still under warranty in 2005 on to extend it 2 years. i extended it on my TJ til 2008 when i had it. covered it like the original warranty and was transferable in some cases so its worth checking.

Its an internal filter.

And it's meant to last the life of the transmission. Which in this case isn't too long...

If it's a private sale it's your problem.

That is the exact same problem (after 150,000km though) i had before i converted.. N blinked and was in neutral. However mechanic said to me that it most likely was a sensor that got disconnected or something like that on the transmission, and was easily fixed. I never got it checked, but anyways.

If you bought through a dealer, take it back... simple.

Fitted this nice little kit to my TL last weekend, along with new fluid. It's a Perma-cool remote filter plate, which will accept just about any canister filter. It's hard to say yet, as I've only done about 70k since I put it on, but I think it'll make a difference.

Sorry if I'm slow - but I take it you bought the car privately? Never hurts to get a second mechanic opinion either, otherwise looks like you're up for a couple grand.

There is a transmission place just 3 buildings away from where i work. Maybe they know the problem and can fix it?
Transmission workshop should know a bit more than a normal mechanic.

Before you replace anything, get the car scanned to determine the fault code ("N" flashing should generate a code). Sometimes, the pulse generators on these trannys have a habit of failing!! About $250 to fix.

Same symptoms as you are describing!
