Hey,
I have a 98 TF 3.0L Manual which i've had for 5 months.
I has just started Crunching when i change gears and is difficult to get into gear when its cold.
Would changing the transaxle oil help? Or is it more serious..
Also, in the cold, as well as the difficult changes i've notices the engine makes a ticking or tapping noise until it warms up... does anyone know why?
Thanks for the help.

make sure you use the correct oil as well. From memory it is a 75/85 Viscosity for the gearbox. Adding a tube of nulon g70 helps too!!

1st change your oil, usually thats the answer straight away, if it contiues, it probably your synchros.
tapping comes from the vlaves it could be from a variety of things, it could be wrong oil, valves needing adjusting, or you have a magna and it will tap like that cuz it can and wants to.

Like others have suggested change the gearbox oil (I used Motul FF LSD and my crunching problems went away) I get some tapping too on cold startup, but not all the time and I think it's something actually hitting on the timing belt.

If im changing oils, to say a synthetic engine oil, do i need to pour through some sort of cleaner?

You can flush some really cheap oil through to clear out the crap if you want to, but it won't really matter. I've changed a few cars over from mineral oil to fully synthetic, without a drama.
