Hey guys, I've had my Verada for about 18months now and it has been serviced every 6 months. Has been great up till about a month ago when problems kept popping up.

Firstly there is the oil leak which is blamed on the rocker covers, I;m not planning to replace these as I want to sell the car in about 6 months time. I was just wondering if the leaks will cause any other damage etc. I top up the engine oil whenever needed, I check every fortnight or so, however it usually only needs to be topped up every 2 - 3months or so.

Just recently my exhaust has been making a really weird sound when accelarating, sounds like a sports exhaust. I had a mechanic look at it when I had it serviced last week and he said theres no leak in the exhaust but rather one of my pistons isn't running smoothly or not running or something and thats the cause of the problem. I've also noticed a performance loss, it's noticable, especailly from 90km onwards, if I keep accelarating, the gearknob area has a noticalbe vibration and sounds weird, and a constant vrrrr sound and it doesn't seem to shift up anymore, im not sure if there is another gear or not though. Is this due to the piston problem or something else?

And just yesteraday, I noticed when I start accelrating there is a rattling sound from underneath the car, like metal to metal, only there when I accelarating slowly. Wondering if anyone has had this problem.

Also the car has done almost 130 000km and I don;t know if the precious owner changed the timing belt or not, I got it at around the 105 000km mark. Is there a way to check to see if it needs changing?

Any help would be appreciated, as I really only want to spend the bare minimum to keep the car running for now.

Thanks in advance

i hav the same rattling problem was told it was my cat converter, apparently all the inside of it had broken up and was rattling fairly loud. dont no about any of the other problems tho.

i have that problem in my zuki, sounds nasty at times

ok cheap fix

take cat off and bash it out with broom handle

get 10mm socket and remove rocker cover 5min job, wipe it clean of oil and use bit of silicone if needed for good seal

cost = free

time = 1hour tops all up

:P

I'm clueless when it comes down to cars and parts, I would try it but I'm scared I won't be able to put it back together later...

I told the mechanic to fix the oil leak and the exhaust noise, so he said he'd have to replace the spark plugs and leads and the rocker covers. And quoted me $500, got it down to $450. Is this price reasonable?

If I was keeping the car, and i wasn't sure if the belt had been changed, I would have it done as a precaution.

The rocker cover gaskets leaking isn't uncommon, on any car. Generally isn't cause for panic, but the gaskets are fairly inexpensive. Excessive labour may be because the intake plenum and has to be removed to gain access to the rear bank, but $450 sounds excessive.

When I bought my TF sports 2 years ago it cost me around $588.50 for a combination of 90k/105k service which included
oil, oil filter, timing belt, 6 x platinum plugs, wiper blades, cam seals, fuel flter.

mechanic noted sump weeping (i haven't seen many that don't) that was 2.5years ago and car doesn't use any oil between services and doesn't drip either.
