Hi Everyone

Ive had a rumbling/grinding noise that happens every time I turn right for several weeks now. It has been getting worse and now happens on left turns too. I took the car to Pedders about 6 weeks ago and they noted on the safety check that the steering rack needs to be replaced. They said they did not know what the noise was though as it was so intermittent.

This noise is now more frequent and I reckon this is what it is even though Pedders couldnt tell me at the time. Has anyone else had this happen, can you remember what sound you observed if it was the steering rack?

CV joints are all good.

I plan to get it fixed soon but am hoping this "noise" is not something else. My instincts say this is what it is as it happens when I turn as everything else has been checked over and I was told it was OK.

Thanks for reading

Kate

pedders dont have a good reputation

how many km has the car done

would only be the steering if it was a power steering pump noise thats a growl and you would have to be lossing oil

power steering racks dont make a noise just leak when worn

a steering boot torn is an easy fix the boot is just a dust cover

might be the hub bearings
but more likely it will be the cv joints if the noise is occuring
as you turn

have a read of this and think about the noises again

Thanks for the link. Car has done 162,000. Ive been assured CV's are fine. The noise I get is def not a clicking or popping noise, much more of a grindy/rumbling noise on a hard turn. I might take it back there and see if they can give me any more clues as it is much more frequent now

hard to say with that low kms depends on how th car has been driven since new

could be the power steering pump ... that noise should be heard turning left or right

could be the hub bearings both an easy fix

They didnt note anything about the power steering pump when they checked it over but perhaps i will ask them to check again.

I have had the car since it had done 108,000. It was locally owned and well looked after as per the log book details from Mitsubishi here in SA.

I just dont want to spend $500 on them fixing bushes and steering racks and then find out I still have this rumbling grindy noise.

Thanks for all the info
