Okay, what 225/50R17 and 235/45R17 tyres do you have?
I'm interested in:
Make
Model
Size
Load & speed rating
Width of rim it's on
Price
Dry grip
Wet grip
Is it noisy?
Happy with it?
Tomorrow's 'D' Day (hopefully). So far I've been considering Bridgestone's GIII and some Falken 225/50R17's. I'm not sure about 235/45R17 yet.
bridgestone GII 225/50/17
great tyre we/dry great hold in braking, all the way to the end (where im getting now)
had some problems in qld when the rd was flooding a little bit but i doubt any other tyre could have handled it any better than these tyres even when i got a little aqua plane they seemed to grab the rd soon after.
lasted ages fronts are 26000kms with about 1mm left.(with tcl tho :P which keeps me honest)

i've got the potenza G3's 225/50/17 and they're awesome... might not be THE grippiest, but still very good, and i've hed them for over a year now and sill plenty of tread to go! and very low raod noise aswell. i'll be getting them again

I'm on my 2nd set of Goodyear Revspec 225/50/17.
Found them to be a great all round tyre, which gave me plenty of mileage too.

ok ive gotta ask. how come there are so many guys on here with 17's who obviously need tyres as well but redav seems to be the first guy who has bought up this problem??? are there extenuating circumstances in this particular instance or is it just that no one else has bothered checking???
i got falken 235/45/R18
they are great, good in the wet, quiet, last long
there are others i was told about which last 20k's longer then the falken but with a diff tread pattern, cant remember the name,
oh yeh mine are 18's but meh

i have a vrx the gII and gIII are load rated 94 i beleive and seeing that they are the tyres that came with the car i can get 94 load wheneever i want.
id say an insurance company wouldnt have a leg to stand on if they didnt pay up because of the tyres because you could quite easily take em to the ombudsman and they would make them pay as soon as you showed them the vrx / ralliart compliance.

Because I'm too much of a goodie-goodie. Anyone with a Magna and a load rating of 95 simply cannot legally fit 225/50/R17's to their car. I've checked out the specs of 15 manufacturers and none of them make any.

Well, that's relatively hypocritical. It's saying that it's okay to comply with the TJ's rating but not the TF's. It is rediculous and not reasonable, but they're following what a manufacturer specifies so they aren't doing anything wrong.

I most certainly checked it all out when I bought mine - I can't afford to not have insurance payout if something goes wrong.
I have 235/45 R 17 Toyo Tranpath SW's with a 97 load rating.
They were $205ea and are very good tyres. They are not noisy at all, and have alot more grip in the wet and dry than the stockies (probably just becuase they are so much wider)
The only complaint I have about them is they don't have an aggressive tread pattern.
I have some pics of them :

I have the same tire. Obviously I don't drive hard enough!
Mine had 35,000k's and the fronts had at least 2mm, prob 3mm left in them. Car is now 16 months old. Bought Sept 2002.
The backs had 5mm. (But I just rotated them all last week).

Interesting, Grecy. No probs falling off the rims obviously. Are the side walls vertical? Where are Toyo tyres made?
Simiatoma 235 / 45 / 17 Z Grade
Great grip and the wet and dry, fantastic for cornering.
Very low road noise and good wear, I get about 1 - 2 year out of them.

What about the load rating? Speed would be Z. Where are they made?
Also, has anyone got Yokohama's A539's? Just wondering if they'll fit to a 7' rim alright. I think Falken also have some 235/45's that are rated at 97 but they recommend an 8' wheel :(.

Grecy's tyres are ok. They comply with the load rating - a matter which not too many ppl here actually replied on....
Mine and Redav's cars are 95 rated, we cannot budge from it.
Currently I have Falkens of 93 - and I'm in process of taking the issue further. But that will be another thread when matters proceed accordingly, I will post it then. It will be quite interesting.
Glad to hear that the Toyos aren't too bad. Consider them, Redav.

I also definately bought mine on a budget, anything over $250/tyre was completely out of the question.
I've had no problems with the 235's on the 7' rim, although depending who you talk to, it's illegal.
I'd say the sidewalls of the Toyo's aren't 100% vertical which makes them look like they are higher profile than they are.. I'm still very happy with them though.
I've only done about 5000k's on them, so I don't know about the wear yet. The guy said that becuase Magna's are hard on tyres I should rotate them about every 6 - 8000 kays to get maximum life.

225/50/R16 92 W
Dunlop SP3000A
beatiful in the wet but not as good in the dry, tends to slip a bit, only on hard corners!!!
impossible to rip a burnout or a handbrake turn even in the wet!!!
very good value for money tyres!

Cookie,
I am running Nexus tyres on mine 235/45/17 on a 7.5" rim and I have no problems with them. The cost per tyre is around $200.
Cheers

I was told that on the GTV rim which is 17"x7" you are unable to run 235/45/17s.. Is he right or what?

Well, depends I think. Manufactures specify a range or optimum sizes but they aren't always absolute. At the moment I think I'm going to go for the 235/45R17's on these 7' wide rims. They're specified rim width is an 8' and using them on a 7' will be pushing the limit but I'm game. They are the option to meet the load limit requirements.

I haven't seen any RTA regs on this matter. Has anyone else? The recommendation to put certain tyres on certain rims appears to be only be the tyre manufacturers, hence doing so, might void the tyre warranty. Big deal? I have never had a faulty tyre as such when using good brands.
Considering how difficult it is to get 235/45/17 on to legal (7") rims, I could handle the "possible risk".
235's on the 7' rim, although depending who you talk to, it's illegal.-Dan

Well, I'll let you know. I'm going fairly hardcore. Falken ZE-512's. 235/45R17's, (they're directional), for $220 a pop and ZE-326 225/50R17 for the spare wheel at $251. I'll take photos tomorrow and post them. Any idea if tyres need to bed in like brakes? I think my poxy RE-92's were better after a thousand k's. They went downhill from there

why are you going a different and more expensive tyre for your spare???

Because the wider tyres are a common size/ratio so are cheaper whereas the spare is the obscure size so more expensive. The spare is a different tread pattern as the 4 main tyres are directional and the spare isn't.

How interesting hey.
What do you mean??? :?

Why can't u use just any old tyre as a spare? It's legal, tho.
Tyres do need to be "bedded in" for some 200-300 km. Why? The lubricant used to ram the tyre to the rim will take some time to dry off, so if u hammer the car b4 it dries, the tyres might spin on the wheel and lose balance. No other damage is happening tho.

Hmmm... good point. Wished I had thought that one out. Oh well, now I've got a sexy spare tyre. Oh, the spare tyre didn't have legal tread anyway so that's why
