before i start

yes mods i know this has been posted before, yes ive used the search button and found next to nothing that helps,
please hear me out...

the past 3 tanks my economy has dropped SEVERELY.

normally i will get 500km a tank city driving give or take. now its about 350/400 give or take.

and before everyone starts yes ive got a brand new O2 sensor and tried a different MAF with no avail. the only other thing that may have made a difference was the 3000gt intake kit i got, but that was a number of months ago and actually made economy better.

ecu was tested and only SLIGHT problems found with knock sensor and air temp sensor which have since been dealt with.

please help as i want my economy back!!!

thanx all, please allow mods...

tim

you need to go to dyno or place where a gas analasier can be hooked up to see whats going wrong and where

done just about everything on that car how much are new injectors ?

any vacumme leaks ?

could be a warning of a Icu failure pending --even when tested ok

or loose wiring connection-- might be something simple/ plugs/ leads/coil

dissy is new all sensors new ..you reset the computers again done injectors

cleaned out plenium

were the valves ok and good compression/ hydraulic tappets?

the only other thing i can think of would be a sensor i missed or injectors... ill reset the ecu today and see how that goes. you have some v6 injectors dont ya buffy? if not does anyone? might buy em of ya if the wreckers dont cough em up. might get ya to have a look at it buff

How's your temp reading? Being the middle of winter, if your thermostat has stuffed up, the car will take forever to warm to proper operating temp, which will have a big impact on economy. Found that mine had started doing this, replaced it the other day (sub $20 total), much better.

the temp sender under the inlet manifold on the dissy side may be faulty

thats a good call--havent done the thermostat - temp is everything to a TR

not to mention the extra weight of the boom box in the boot

then the mags cracking

injectors no buy your own !!

watch it ...I ll start call you darling if you let out my injector secrets:rant:

hahahah, thermostat easy job? ill look into it. easy darling...

Assuming it's anything like the V6, less than a 15min job, and that's really scraping the surfaces clean etc.
Hardest part might be finding somewhere that has the thermostat and gasket in stock, I had to go through three places 'til I found 'em.

Oh, and your engine needs to be cold, so no driving to the store and then replacing, need to replace the next day probably. Unless you go in the morning and install late arvo maybe...

oki doki, cant be overly hard. i work at supercheap so getting the part wont be a drama. thanx rogue, hopefully this fixes the problem..

I had to remove thermostat at 8pm on narre-warren cranbourne rd in peak-hour because it was stuck closed and the car'd overheated.

follow the top hose from the radiator (on the left) until it goes into this houseing. you have to undo those bolts, and out pops the thermostat along with the gasket. thing is, you might have to take off intake pipe to get to it. took me about 10mins to take off, put back on and refill radiator with water.

put back on and refill radiator with water.

Coolant will do a better job.

I agree, but at the time I was a while from a petrol station and had brought about 6L of water.

use coolant, always better to use what's supposed to be used :)

u had a spare thermo on you? or u just removed it?

nah I removed it to drive it home. went to auto barn the next day and grabbed a thermo for it. the car was in the middle of the left-hand lane, so I had to get it out of there, I wouldn't be able to sleep knowing it was sitting on the side of the road in narre warren.

sweet as, fuel rail didnt have to come off?

I am in the same problem, just realised I got 400Km from a tank, and I mostly do highway trips!

Will have to check out this thermostat thing...

You shouldn't need to pull it out to check it (which will stuff the current gasket anyway), it should be fairly obvious if your car takes forever to get to a "normal" temp. If it warms up reasonably quickly, thermo's probably OK.
Then again, for the price, it could be a case of "may as well rule it out".

yann89

always good to change the thermostat put a new one in. it doesnt cost that much so may as well.

yes the fuel line must come out of the fuel rail, forgot to add that.

RoGuE_StreaK

yes the fuel line must come out of the fuel rail, forgot to add that.Really? You don't need to touch anything else on the V6, it's there in plain sight. Sounds a fair bit more complicated for the 4.

yann89
26-07-2007, 12:53 PM
yeah, form memory, you have to take off the intake pipe, then the fuel line, then the hose leading to the bell housing for the thermostat, then take the housing off. the hose kinda hinders getting to the lower bolt for the housing.

im pretty sure my problem is air:fuel ratio. started the car this morningn let it warm up n there was black crap pouring out of the exhaust. how do i adjust the ratio?

yann89
26-07-2007, 04:28 PM
That's weird...

grregorys' confirms what I was sure of. fuel mixture is regulated by ECU and can't be changed.

Check spark plugs for real black deposits on it, could be that the oil is mixing in the cylinder or somthing similar...

RoGuE_StreaK

If the thermostat were stuffed, I think they run rich in cold-engine mode? So there could be a link between the two.
Dunno, I was just throwing in the thermostat as something to check that may be a cause at this time of year.

yann89
26-07-2007, 07:55 PM
but if it's brought up to operatin temp and it's blowing black smoke it could be that oil is mixing, though that would be more dark grey than black...

white smoke condensation
black smoke fuel
blue smoke oil

there ya go:) hehe...maybe its worth a check anyways?

P.S- I have very slight colour blindnes, so I describe things a little differently...blue oil smoke seems more dark grey to me

im pretty sure the thermostat isnt involved but ill give it a go anyway, she warms up fine so im sure it isnt that but its worth replacing it. ill give it a service in a few days n see how that goes.

any sensors or senders that could be causing low economy AND loss of power? economy is getting worse and worse. i might kick the car, that usually fixes things like tvs and radios lol

kick it on the tyre like they do in the movies...funny how it miraculously starts after that isnt it?! lol

In gregory's manual, it's got fuel pressure and "blocked air cleaner element" in both "ENGINE LACKS POWER" and "EXCESSIVE FUEL CONSUMPTION" headings.

fuel pressure.... hmmm blocked air cleaner, unlikely coz i got a pod. will look into it tomorrow, changing the oil and whatnot so ill have a good look around and get back to yas

ok just flushed the oil, added new oil + filter and trying a stabilizer. nothing different as yet, still lacking power. veradabeast is being a champ and sending me some v6 injectors so ill give them a clean and see how they go.
keep the ideas coming ppl. no blockages in the intake either.

here are some pix of my plugs. as u can see theres alot of black and crap lol, however the iridium eletrode is still clean which is too be expected
