View Full Version : Snapped wheel stud - bad?

Ok sounds like a stupid question, of course a snapped wheel stud is bad, but only the end of it has snapped off.
I can still put my mag wheel nut on at least half on into the nut (this is on a stock rim now) and i'd say the amount of nut that has gone on the stud would be about the same if not abit more than the height of a standard wheel nut.

So my question is, is this so bad? I do plan on replacing the wheel stud in 2 months time when i get new mags, but for now will it be ok? I can't see why not but i'm hoping someone might know something i don't :).

I've brocken 2 wheel studs in the last few months, thanks to 2 different idiotic tyre place or mechanics who cross-threaded them. That's what you get for not sticking to your trusted mechanic/tyre joint.

Both times I was driving on 4 wheels studs with no problem, I was advised it's safe. Supoosedly even having 2 brocken wheel studs is fine , as long they aren't next to each other.

Get it fixed soon, but I wouldn't worry about anything happening, unless another one breaks, next to the first one.

Ok cool, like i said it still has 5 studs on, so it would be even better than having 4 studs, call it 4 1/2 studs if you want lol.

Thanks for that :).

how did it happen was it the ford rim? cause i know the center bore is bigger so theres more stress on the studs. id replace it eventually even if the nut still goes on.

The bore is the same size AU+ as the magna, it was snapped because the wheel nut got threaded, and me trying to undo it managed to put too much weight on the stud and snap (i was standing on the wheel nut undo'er thingy lol).

*EDIT*
Yeh i plan to replace it in a couple of months when i get some 18's.

I agree, even just four studs will get you through. And as you say the remaining stud still has most of the thread still in use so not to bad. But is an easy fix specially if you are planing new wheels anyway. Up on the hoist at eye level very easy change over.

bwahahahahaha you retard never stand on that. firstly you can really injure yourself pretty bad if you slip of it, you can damage your car and also break stud (which you just did lol)

dude they arnt that expensive to buy and change. they are only screwed in (correct me if im wrong) so go to mitsi or repco and get some.

but ye no biggy really.

you went to heathcote with 4 studs and did the drags didnt you??? so dont worry bout it

worse comes to worse wheel comes of you lose control hit a tree. just get out and say i was trying to drift and all will be good lol

Actually i stand on the tyre iron to undo the nuts. And if im lazy i will do it to tighten it just a little bit more.

i do it aswell, i know its potentially bad but hey like you said how expensive can a wheel stud be! But my mate snapped his wheel nut and is stil driving around with four. Nothings happened yet and its been a few months. although im not saying he is a smart person for doing so, quite the opposite.lol

lol yeh always used to stand on them if couldn't undo them with my hands, when i was standing on it today, i wasn't actually "standing", more of a "jumping". I guess 150kg is too much for one poor little stud :P.

Pretty sure they are just bolted in, but will bother about it when i get new wheels.

Yeh went to heathcote on 4 studs and will never do it again, wheel was unstable and made quite a bad noise. Thats why i wanted to make sure 4 1/2 studs were ok :).

About 10 bux ea. Grooved and tapered fit, tap it from wheel side and it will pop out. Ensure the path is clear first tho, don't bang against the brake disk. :D
It could be jammed pretty hard, so keep tapping, don't use excessive force with massive sledge.

Im too scared to take my wheels off because I always snap at least one.

Ive replaced about 5 wheel studs this year, only charge me $20 fitted for em so Im happy.

I drove on 3 studs after my last tyre change and was even doing some chirpies in the rain and they tyre never felt like coming off even with the hub locator still on with a stock rim so it couldnt be tightened 100%

Bottom line......youll be fine, get it replaced whenever not massively urgent.

Where did you go to get it done for $20?

Are you taking them off with a jackhammer or something? lol

You have to stand on the lever? Seriously? Just grip the thing on the outer most edge and pull up with you arms and back.

Either that or grab a bit of box/tube bar for a bit more leverage.

Not always, but all my nuts were done up at a tyre joint last time so me vs. an air compressor, i know who's better and doing up nuts tight :P.

Just a tip guys, I don't use the factory tyre lever. I have a socket bar and apropriate socket in my tool kit. Bar is about a foot long with a swivel, gives you great leverage and and the swivel lets you get to it at any angle works wonders. (And no slipping).

ive been driving around on 4 studs for ages now, i lost the socket for my security nut.
No problems yet....i really should get a set of nuts, i work in a nut and bolt shop, shouldnt be that hard!!!

Forgot to mention, pulling up is better than standing on it, obviously can't apply more than your weight in force down.

yeah i can im freeking tough as

i bent my wheel brace today!!! lol

seriously

luckily the mercedes 20yo tool kit in the boot is over engineered like everything on the mercedes and got me out of strife!!

my valiant had several broken wheel studs all due to the fault of beaurepairs and the fact that they are complete noobs!!

but i had them repaired and i drove for months with no suspension and only 4 studs holding the wheel on (i forgot cos the hubcaps covered them)

I'd rather stand on the wheelbrace than have a wrecked back...

If using a 4way wheelbrace, stand with one foot on the side turning downwards while pulling up by hand on the opposite side.

my dad told me one day that he towed a boat with four nuts on every tyre because some punks though it would be funny to steal the nuts from the trailer. luckily it was a tandem trailer and the wheel that came off didn;t cause any damage. he said it was surreal, travelling at 80kms, they noticed a wheel just pass them by. they then noticed it was theirs.

but yeah, driving with four studs shouldn't be a prob.

Yes - should be mandatory. :D Bad tools slip on the nut and damage it easily.
Driving with less than 5 nuts? Hmmm, ultimately depends on the tyres. If the tyre gives in before too much force is subjected to the wheel, then it's "ok". Not that I would ever play with this kinda stuff, tyres/wheels/brekes - fix them!
