View Full Version : Clutch shudder
Hi guys is it possible to adjust the clutch in a TS V6 manual?
Clutch isn't slipping, but is virtually impossible to start off without the whole car going into a chronic repeated shaking as you balance the clutch between 0-10km/h.
Check your engine mounts for starters... other than that I stab the throttle then squeeze it as I take off, sort of torques the engine against the engine mount so it wont shudder before it engages. Just give it more revs.

agreed..... sounds like loose mounts rather than anything to do with the clutch.

can also be the pressure plate or the hydrulic master and slave system

Most likely.
If the engine "bangs and shakes" when on/off the loud pedal (driving), then I'd guess it's the mounts.

i very much doubt its the engine mounts... once the engine/gearbox is loaded up (ie clutch has been even slightly engaged) the engine and gearbox will rock into a position hard up against what is left of the mounts and stay there.. it has no reason to be shaking backwards and forwards..
sounds like a clutch issue.. possibly your pressure plate is stuffed

I'd say you need a new clutch, i get that all the time atm especially when the car's cold coz i barely got any clutch plate left!

Mine has done it since I got it, it happens without fail when I pull the back wheels over a particular speed bump in town. Definitely not the clutch since it has enough bite to chirp into second gear.

actually every single manual 3rd gen magna ive owned (3 now) shudders sometimes on take off... mitsu themselves told me its a design issue... just because it bites well doesnt tell you much.. yes the clutch plate has plenty of meat but it doesnt mean the clutch isnt the cause...
the problem you have is a 3rd gen problem only, its different to the 2nd gen problem this guy is describing...
Apparently it is the pressure plate -- I've been to a mechanic who refuses to just replace the pressure plate. He wants to replace the entire clutch kit including machining the flywheel for $872 all up, which I think is very expensive.
From you guys' experience, is it possible to just replace the pressure plate (if everything else is still OK), or is it more worthwhile, like this mechanic said, to replace the entire clutch kit?
I think I shall get more quotes from other mechanics in the meantime.

Get more quotes.... but you have to allow a bit of time to do these things. Time is money. the clutch kit i think shoulnd't be much more than $250, its labour.
Remove g/box and refit. A fly to re-machine shouldn't be much more than $50
And as far as just replacing the P/plate.. do you want to save $150 only to spend another $1000 to replace the rest when it fails sooner?
Do the lot my 2c.....
Check your mounts aswell.
To be honest I haven't had any clutch shudder in the last month since I replaced my drivers side engine mount with a poly one.

your mechanic is smart.. you never only do one part of the clutch.. believe it or not his doing the right thing by you..
if he wanted to make money out of you he'd do as you ask and only do the pressure plate.. and then when your clutch plate eventually has nothing left of it he'll get another job out of you to do that aswell...
its a big job pulling the clutch out of a magna... do the whole thing while its out...

My V6 TS Manual is in getting a clutch done today, depending what side of town you are on bests quote i got northside brissy was Direct Clutch services Albion $661 all up, south side United Brake & Clutch Coorparoo $700 all up.
There is around 7 hours labour in the job that why it is expensive, Clutch kit itself costs anywhere between $220 and $280 depending on brand.
Other quotes I got varied from $820 upto $1000.
