View Full Version : my new car is broken :(
What a fecker!! Was driving some friends to the city in my newly acquired TJ Magna, i get onto old windsor road and i start hearing this slapping noise!! I thought it was a flat tyre, so got out. Nope, tyres are all fine, popped the bonnet and revved the engine and the slapping sound was coming from the timing belt region
I was stuck on old windsor road, so i managed to crawl back to my mates house. Grabbed a torch, and there was only a 1/4 of a belt left on the ps/water pump belt. managed to limp to the holden garage where i bought it.
They were still open at 7pm, so they took it from me there and then, it was fixed by 10am this morning! Kudos to Holden Castle Hill. Really good team down there. They replaced both the power steering belt and alternator belt.
Hopefully thats my bit of bad luck with the new girl!

damn that sucks man glad to hear they fixed it for you and especially by just rocking up there hope they did not charge you.
nope they were dead cool about it, they just handed over the keys and said all fixed. I paid a little bit over the odds for it, but i have peace of mind knowing that i can just get the bloody thing fixed straight away at no cost. Its got a great warranty
So wouldn't have been driving it with 1/4 of a belt, they are interference engines, if it snaps you're up for a new top end.
haha that would have been Holdens problem to deal with

Lucky mate. The last owner might not have replaced those belts with the timing belt (assuming the timing belt has been done) Just FYI; those belts are about $25-$30 each and say one hours labour = $90-$110 or so rough guesstimate.
hmm that is odd. The previous owner took very good care of it. Might just have been a bad belt.

Actually Mitsu don't replace those belts when they change the timing belt, they just inspect them. They seem to be long lasting.

Don't they? It's not necessary but it's done as a precaution. Being it's only another $50 or so it makes sense to change them at the same time as doing the timing belt.

it wasnt the timing belt. At worst it would have been no power steering. Alternator would have died too, but battery would have enough juice for an hour or so. If the water pump runs off those belts though...

Similar thing happened to me.
Not long after I bought my TF the power steering belt shredded. Scared the hell out of me.
Once I realised what it was cut belt off and drove home.
They're pretty easy to change.

Power sterring runs off one belt, and alternator/air conditioner runs off the other belt!
