One of the rivets securing my driver's side weathershield on my TL flew off on the highway this morning. As many of you are aware, the TE-TW weathershields (or 'rainguards' in Mitsubishi-speak) are a single long strip of plastic that span from the A-Pillar to the C-Pillar.
ie. Due to the frameless windows, conventional weathershields cannot be used. Fortunately I still have the metal bracket ; it's just the rivet that flew off.

However, I have contacted a couple of Mitsubishi dealers (spare parts, service, sales) and everyone just says that they can't get a replacement rivet. How poor is that, really, when they don't even stock things as simple as nuts, bolts and rivets! Spare parts and sales were quick to try and sell me a whole new rainguard for $208, which I declined of course.

If anyone knows what type of pop-rivet (that's what it looks like) will satisfactorily replace the original ones, any advice would be greatly appreciated. Surely I must be able to get something suitable from a Supercheap Auto or Repco store!!!

Alternatively I could scour the wreckers for a wrecked 3rd gen with weathershields (highly doubt my chances), and grab the entire piece. Even though I've already got two weathershields, it's handy to have a spare, and to have all those extra rivets handy is a comforting thought, seeing as they're so scarce!

yeah i think supercheap sell packets of them to suit variuos vehicles and you should be able to find what you are after in one of those

Have you got a pic of what/where you need the rivet for? I might be able to find something to suit.

Hi guys, thanks for your replies. With much skepticism I went to AutoBarn, and they were really good. They had spare rivets (not exactly the same, but they do the job perfectly) basically over the counter! And as I was buying floormats as well, they didn't even charge me for it

Re-fitting the weathershield was no major drama, although it's a pretty flimsy fit, I must say. The part doesn't sit as well as, say, Subaru Liberty weathershields (same style, as the Liberty also has frameless windows)

I just googled weathershields and you can get them new for $85, but I would have called one of those places and asked them about fixing your existing one.

Glad you are happy with the fix.:)
