Hi Experts,
I am having an issue with my 3l TE. On the way home from work on friday my oil pressure light started to come on. It would only happen when the car was coasting, under load (accelerating or up hill etc.) the light would go off, but then come on again once my foot came off the accelerator. Took it straight to the Mechanic and he dropped the sump off. There was some crud build up near the pickup but after a flush and new oil (the last batch was only 2500 km's old) it started doing the same thing again. Mechanic thinks it might be the oil pump but he has never seen one go on my model magna before.

has anyone had the same problem? I'm almost at the end of my rope with this car, I have spent over $4k on it in the last year in repairs alone, and this looks to be another quite expensive job, might be time to throw the thing in the bin.

The mechanic was Shaun at Tyres and more strathpine (formally Goodyear), and is highly recommended by a few guys floating around here. He has done a fair bit of work for me and it has always been good and in the right price range.

He whacked an oil pressure gauge on and it sits at about 70 at start up but after about 5 minutes drops down to 20-25. This was the test they did to check the switch.

He said that in the 7 years he has been looking at this model he has never seen an oil pump go, but is at a loss for what else it could be.

Mate I'd say your pump has had it. If it's losing pressure as the oil warms up and loses pressure off load, then it's probably just about gone.

I haven't ever heard of one wearing out/failing, but that said my brother's KE is showing the same symptoms you've described.

From memory the switch trips at 50psi, so you're losing quite a bit of pressure.

you lose pressure from worn crank bearings
or the oil pump or pressure relief valve

if the oil pressure sender is working

looked in the manual cant find oil pressure specs

No worries, thanks guys. I think we have made the decision to get rid of it for parts.

Thanks for the help.

Worth checking the oil pressure relief valve. It could do this and it is a comparatively simple job to check it.

Yeah that might be worth a check. Thanks
