Hi Guys.

I have been looking for a Magna and intend to run on gas, finally short listed two Magna TJ. Each has its merits and demerits. Need Your advice which one to go for:

Option 1. Magna 2003 TJ Exec series II factory fitted dedicated LPG, 45,000kms, tippy, tinted, good condition, price 12 grands.
+ves: Factor fitted LPG, low milage, tinted.
-ves: Many say LPG only has cold starting problem, embarassing if it hesitates to
start-owner reports no problem, no climate control, no alloy.

Option 2. Magna 2003 TJ Advance series II, LPG compatible Engine, 65,000 kms, tippy, good condition, price 10.3 grands.
+ves: Climate control and cute little screen, alloy wheels, duel fuel if I spend extra $300
after rebate, driven by a grandpa, pewter body paint.
-ves: Started with a growling noise (tappet like), owner says it was sitting at park for 2
weeks and that could be the reason behind the noise. Noise disappeared after the
engine warmed up and subsequent starting indicated no noise, idling fine. Hard to tell
if anything wrong with lifters or pistons. Inside not so clean, body in good condition.

Considering the +ves and -ves, and price difference, which one do you think I sud go for?

Many thanks in advance.

Option 2 for me. Reason: You can always upgrade to LPG. And its a better car. 20K diff is not much.
What is the color of option 1 ?

agree, option 2 if the engine is fine (get it checked out), better than an exec and can start on fuel then use the gas for freeways etc

As far as I know there is no specefic diagnosis for the lifter/piston slap related cold starting engine problem. I can ask the owner to have it (RACV/RAA/RAC) checked by mechanic, but once running the noise is gone!!! very hard to tell.

Other than climate control and alloy, aren't Exec and Advance the same?

I wud have gone for Advance, but my concern is the engine cond of option 2 and the factory tuned benefit of option 1.

The advance has (above the Exec)...

ABS
Climate control
Dual Air Bags
Cruise Control
Power Windows (front and rear)
155kw (12 KW more than LPG Exec)

very much worth it for the extras, even if its just the ABS and dual airbags for your safety, then add the cruise control/climate control and elec windows as just general day to day extras that come in heaps handy :) trust me, if you havent had them before, you wont be able to live without them after u buy a car with them!

Interestingly, this Exec SII in option 1 also comes with ABS, Cruise. tinted windows and all elec extras. Thats what makes the decision so hard. No climate control and alloys though!!!

For some reasons, the weight of Advance is higher than Exec LPG by around 100KG. If I convert it to LPG, another 70kg weight will be added. Just thinking- is it worth to always carry 170Kg extra in the back?

ABS is standard AFAIK on the TJ s2.

If you say so.

Also, 15" Alloy Wheels, Airbag - Passenger, Cruise Control were optional accessories.
The compliance plate will list them if they were added by the factory as options.

According to my notes...
The exec 1468kgs in standard form
The Advance is 1491 in standard form.
If the Exec has options added, then I don't see the 100kgs difference. Unless of course my sources are incorrect.
