Hi folks,

Have a TJ VRX which I purchased from Mitsubishi dealer 6 months ago, at the time there was a slight droning noise coming from the rear, sounded isolated to the tyres or rear muffler - definetly that area anyway. 6 months on, the droning is substantially worse to the point that passangers comment on it. Its hard to solve whats causing it as I've never experienced this before. I guess it sounds similar to driving a 4WD on a sealed road with all-terrian tyres on it and the humming sound they create. I've had it checked out by Mitsubishi and they blame the tyres, however, whilst the tyres aren't a flashy brand, they are only 6 months old and have easily 80%+ tread. I can appreciate that some tyres are nosier than others, but this is stupidly noisy!!
PS: the car has also been lowered 1" more than the VRX std. Not sure if that chages anything?

Any advice PLEEEEASE!!!!!

Suggest you do a search on VRX and Sports mufflers in the forums.
Droning is a common issue that some like and others don't.

If you aren't worried about the slight Kw drop you'll see mentioned in the threads, I have a second hand Magna Executive muffler I need to get rid of. I got a Berkeley Sports muffler which has a very slight drone but is straight through design - you could consider one of those.

Cheers and good luck - bet you change your muffler to get rid of or minimise the drone. :)

man i had the same problem in my merc

was driving me nuts happened a few days after i lowered it and it was getting worse and worse!!!!!!!!!!!! arhhhh!!

wheel bearing. i adjusted it and it's smooth sailing for me

can be the tyres shocks and anything to do with the suspension though

i had good tread 99% tyres that sounded like mud terrains on a car once drove me nuts so i got new ones

try rotating the tyres around see if there is any diff...

also exh, muffler might be gone, or leaking

well thats a start anyway

Definetly don't believe its the muffler, I've had exhaust drowing before, its more like a cosistent humming noise, like I said, similar to when you hear a big 4WD go past with off-road tyres. sorry, should have been more specific.

Had a wheel bearing collapse as well, and it made a horrible noise on the freeway.
Could also be a hole in the muffler.

Run your hand over the tyres and check for lumps.... cheap tyres make horrible road noise!

If it's not the muffler, try jacking your wheels up and spinning them by hand. If it feels or sounds rough the the guys are right - replace the bearings as tightening will not fix it - the ball hard casing of the bearings is cracked or worn through and will only get worse. You'll hear the rumbling or grinding as you spin the wheels if it's the bearings.

You may have to replace the hubs as Mitsu don't supply bearing kits for the rears. Otherwise a bearing place may be able to do it for you.

Does anyone have part numbers for Magna rear bearings ?

Our TJ Sports had a massive noise from the rear end just as you describe when we first bought it (BIG 4WD tyre noise). Had 6 month old Bridgestone Grid II tyres.

Took a rear wheel off and inspected tyre - very worn (scalloped) on inner tread block, both L and R tyres, rest of tread face perfect.

Swapped front and rear wheels to see what effect it had, noise went away instantly.

Rear wheel alignment was out, which caused wierd tread wear, which caused the noise/droning/whirring

Try the F-R swap - it's free!

I know exactly what noise you are talking about.
We had the same problem. My brother took one drive, and said its defiantly the wheel bearings. Replaced them, and its all smooth sailing now :)

They aren't that expensive either...I'll dig up the receipt of what we paid and let ya know ;)

I have a droning noise at 80km/h and 100km/h... turns out it's a blown head gasket between 2 of the cylinders....

might be rear wheel bearrings on their way out?

*EDIT*- yeah sorry, didnt see everyone else posted that too:)

the only reason I said this is because the bearring on my sisters subaru are in need of replacement and it's making a really annoying, whirring, droning noise at anywhere above 30kmph

Sorry for thread mining but...

Did you end up fixing the noise? From what youve described my GTV is doing the exact same...
Has 80%+ GridII's.

Wondering if you tried the tyre swap front to rear and if it helped, or if you ended up having to do the bearings?

Cheers
Luke

the problems are the grid2 tyres mate, i think everyone that has had them has had the same problem. i didnt rotate mine for 20k and the hum from the rear was unbearable. I rotated and the sound moved to the front. but now the sound has gone away after 4k or so.

I suggest 5k rotations with the grid II's

I have 17" Grid II's and no noise what so ever......great tyre, good grip in wet and dry, and actually rather quiet!
