Hi,
Auto gearbox / engine revs - What happens is when it goes to change gears it revs to over 3000rpm then changes. Sometimes it causes a double lurch.
I had it in a few weeks back and they smoothed it out. Told me the auto gearbox electrics needed to be recalibrated. It’s back again and doing the same thing. I've got it booked to be checked out again. Anyone seen this?
Ticking sound in the morning - When I start it up and put it in to gear it has a ticking sound for a while. It goes after a while, but coming from a Commodore background its unusual. Anything to worry about?

This happened to a mate of mine's magna. He had to get the ECU reset. I think its very simple to do, make sure you get a few quote. But its definatly something to do with the electrics, could even be a faulty sensor.
As for the ticking, have no idea where to start there... is it head noise?
When the gears change, does it sound like it stays in neutral (in between gears) for a second or 2?
If so, ask them to Flash the chip to the latest version.. This can fix it.
My 2002 VRX had the same problem (as i described above) with the gear box. They flashed the chip first which didnt fix the problem. They ended up replacing it with a new gearbox (still covered under warranty) The Mitsu guys from Adelaide came over to Melbourne to run some Mileage tests on the car. Was the first type of problem they have seen with the Series 2 model (gearbox). (lucky me  )
Car runs like a dream now..
Isnt the car suppose to be at 3000rpm, that is the right speed gauge with x1000r/m or something isnt it? if so, yeah mine is at the 3 mark which is 3000 i think. with the aircon on, when the fan noise kicks in to cool car down, it revs up a bit to 4000rpm then comes back down to 3000rpm.

Last time it wasn't anything major. If I remember correctly it was a quick job. But when I say last time I mean 2-3 weeks ago.

It isn't a huge ticking. Its just a noise I can hear when the car is cold in the morning. By the time I'm 200m down the road its fine.

Yeah I guess thats what it is. It puts the clutch in, revs it for a second then releases the clutch. Just that sometimes it makes a shitty choice when to change and might do it at the low end of the revs.

I hear this was a very comon problem. I understand that many auto gearboxes on the 3L models had problems around the 96-99 Magna's. True or not I don't know.
Then its a gearbox problem.
Youll either have to put up with it.. Or get it replaced.
My parents own a 96 Magna, theyve had 2 gearbox's in it so far.

this is your opportunity - change the box for a manual!!
hey it is almost everybody's dream!!
haha - except for those of us who already have it!! hahaha
hmmm, sad really!!
Manual
The ticking noise comes standard from the factory:) Cheack your oil level to make sure its topped up, if it is, its just a normal cold start noise, all the oil is at the bottom of the engine and it takes a few seconds to reach the top.
I drive a manual magna so don't know much about the auto, but I do know if you want to re set the ECU, just disconnect your battrey over night.

Ah ha! Thats what it is then. A few weeks back they adjusted something in the car which fixed the problem.
I did some work and had the battery disconnected for hours. So at a guess and using that information the changes they've made have taken it back to defaults and now its playing up again.

I've had that sort of problem in my old TE Magna and other auto cars... there's a sort of temporary fix you can do, but it only fixes the case where the car downshifts far too early giving the car a bit of a jolt... I used to slow down using the brake and pop the stick into neutral... then using the heel of the braking foot, blip the engine revs up gently to about the point where it would be if you were to downshift then, then pop the stick back into drive... If you don't match it properly it still jolts the car, but if you match it properly it's almost a seamless transition... You can use left foot/right foot combination if blipping the accelerator feels too weird, but I find left foot braking just wrong for some reason...
Otherwise, just take it completely out of gear and into neutral until you come to a stop... the problem with this is that sometimes you don't end up needing to stop and then you've got the problem with mis-matched revs at that point... also then shifting the stick back into drive from a standing stop, it jolts the car sometimes... could just be my old dodgy transmission...
Bottom line: get a manual =P I couldn't get one so I settled for the next best thing; tiptronic =D

as ash said disconnect ur battery for a while and this will reset ur ecu and the box should go back to normal it can happen when u drive ur auto box like a manual the computer learns this and that causes the jerking when u drive it in drive 4 a while ive done it a few times also it wont hurt to get the box flushed of all the old oil not just drop the oil and filter u have to flush the torque converter aswell for a full fresh fill.
