Hi guys... was wondering what is the exact engine oil that we should use...
the book says 10W 30
Mitsu sells u 15w-40
people recommend magnatec 10w-40 ( currently using... bad... rough engine and lifters are making tick tick tick.... the car has only 67Ks on the clock )
some say 15w-40 Valvoline ( never tried before but it looks alright )
while others go mobil ( kind of pricy with nothing that amazes me..)
shell ( personally feel is a NO GO for low mileage cars... )
penrite ( used HPR 15 before and it made the car feel like a snail but dont know about the HPR5 so no comments on it yet...)

just changed my engine oil like 1200k ago but decided that it (magnatec) should go as it made the car which i just bought 1 month *TL* ago sound like my old *TJ* which i suddenly realise that the sound form my TJ could have been caused by the OIL... damm magnatec...
anyway was wondering what u guys think... somehow have a good feeling on the Valvoline XLD Engine Armour 15w-40 Semi-synthetic.... pls advice... dont want the new TL to sound like my TJ... yaks...

considering the TL and TJ share exactly the same engine....... it seems logical to me that that one would sound like the other  .

Your profile says that you have an auto...... so I think you'll find that a rough idle is pretty much normal..... no oil will make a difference in my opinion.

In my personal experience...... I use magnatec in my unmodded TJ and don't have any issues with it (it's an auto, and the idle is abit rough sometimes), and I run Motul 300V 10W40 in my TT beasty and am 100% happy with it.

when i meant they sound the same obviously i meant something wasnt right... when i had my TJII at first it sounded not exactly new... and after i clock like 20Ks on it the engine sounded bad.... now when i got a TL at half the mileage of the TJ the engine sounds perfect but after i changed the oil on it to magnatec it made the engine sound abit rough... what i am pointing out now is that i am hoping to rectify the possible reason why the engine sounds bad in like 3 weeks... before it sounds like my old TJII. in simple i want to keep the engine running as good as it can get... engine oil plays one of the main role in a car from my experience and understanding...

i'm using Magnatec at the moment, but am going to change cos it's made my lifters noisy on cold startup. Didnt have any probs with the lifters till i changed to Magnatec.

but didnt have any probs with my old car on it

iirc, the two numbers in the oil type are the different viscosities when cold vs hot. The higher the numbers, the thicker the oil, in other words. A new engine that is still fairly tight therefore needs lower viscosity oil in order to get into the nooks and crannies, whereas an older and looser engine needs a higher viscosity oil to "plug the gaps" and keep the engine properly lubricated.

One of the side effects of using a thin oil in an old engine is that it sounds a lot more rattly and noisy in general. This is because it is not being properly lubricated and so you are actually accelerating the wear and tear. By switching to a thicker oil (ie. higher numbers - say 20W50 vs 10W40 for example) you provide the engine with the lubrication it needs, thus prolonging its life - and a happy side effect is that it often runs quieter too.

Going the other way, using a high viscosity oil on a newish engine can cause problems, since you're trying to force thick oil through places it just doesn't go properly. This means the engine does not get lubricated properly (and some parts maybe not at all), and thus accelerates wear and tear. Not to mention possible oil pressure problems also.

Basically, you should always be running the correct oil for your car, and if you are unsure in any way seek professional advice. Any decent mechanic will be only too happy to advise you as to the correct oil you should be using in your car. As a rough guide though, if the engine sounds rough and rattly, move to a higher grade of oil - and get a proper tune up while you're at it!
