View Full Version : Stereo playing up

Argh! It's always one problem after another. In the last 2 days, my stereo has been playing up. It will in the middle of driving, decided to switch itself off and no amount of button pressing, removing faceplate and putting back in will let it switch on again.

Then 5-10 minutes later, it switches itself on again. Talk about Ghost in the machine.

The only new addition to the car is the GPS which is running off the cigarette adaptor charger.

One thing I notice though, is when the stereo switches off, even the nice blinking red light that is visible when you remove the face plate is not blinking.

Any suggestions? I am thinking it's probably the fuse at the moment but since have to work today, would like to trawl for ideas so that can examine them all on my day off.

loose wire methinks

I'm willing to agree with liverpool_rule_88 and say theres a loose wire somewhere.

Probably one of the connections to the rear of the HU. I'm presuming this only occurs when your driving? If you've got the car parked and it goes off for ten minutes its probably something else, but the bumps from driving around are enough to bump a loose wire/plug around enough to cause the problem your describing.

Pull the HU out and firmly re-attach all the wiring then test.

Edit: Tell me, when the stereo isn't functioning, if you rock the car around with your own body force, does it eventually cut back in?

Hmm, will try but a bit afraid of leaving big dents in car. Not a small fellow, you know.

will probably have a look at the fuses first then rip the HU out. Not too keen to do so as had a lancer previously and when ripping the HU out, also managed to rip out the console frame in 3 different pieces.

LOL....just put you hands on the pillar when the drivers door is open and push backwards and forwards, see if it cuts in and out from the movement of the car.

You say your not too keen on taking the HU out, did you put it in? If you didn't, I would just take it back to whoever you paid to install it, most places give a lifetime warranty on install, so if its something to do with the wiring, thats covered.

How old is the HU too? If its under warranty you should ring up the manufacturer explain the issue to them and see what they suggest.

Hmm, actually you are right. It was done by an AMC member also. Will ring them up and see what they say. Thanks for the tip.

Argh! Just ring them guys at Strathfield Cannington who did the installation. Have to wait to the end of this month to bring my car in  . Damn, Phil must really be busy/ran off his feet over there huh?

No music for 2 weeks

Also check the unit isn't overheating... if you have it turned up a fair way constantly, a thermal cutout may be forcing it to power off.

Other than that, go with the above suggestions, and possibly also check the voltage. If that is too low, it may also refuse to stay on.

Strathfield Car Radio installed it? Ok then, that explains it all!

HAHA, it depends which strathfield you go to, the Pioneer system in my AE82 was done by Strathfield Thomastown and they did a fantastic job, all very professionally fitted and its still working 5 months later. That said it was a simple system, just fronts, backs and the deck.

I'll do the next car myself though, they kill you installation from those places, my install was $170! $170 for 2 hours work! At least mine works though :P

Good Luck with it mate, won't they let you take it in to a different Strathfield?

Had no problems with Strathfield Cannington who install it and 2 other HU in my previous vehicles.

Anyway, took everything down and out. Amazing the amount of wires running around. I think the problem might lie with the HU itself. Pop the old Mitsu headunit in and the blinking red light came on.

Also does anybody know what that grey hose thing is or does?

What blinking red light is this? Is it on the HU? Might be asking for the security code.

Yeah, that's what I mean. Even the blinking red light on the HU is not blinking. Think totally no power going to the HU. Anyways, come Thurs, it will all be sorted out, hopefully.

Kudos to the AMC from Strathfield Cannington. Car was fixed in 30 minutes. Now cannot recall if it was Phil or Dave. But nevertheless, I thank you and my son thanks you. The silence was killing him. Now, he has got music to bop to.

Yeah I had Strathfield Penrith install a Sony HU and a bluetooth car kit in my Barina and they did a brilliant job. When it was time to sell they removed the car kit for me (for free!) and you wouldn't know it had every been there.
