Anyone had any experience of the cheapie alarms / remote locking units like this one on ebay?

Just possibly looking at adding remote locking functionality. Alarm doesn't bother me as such.
So anyone installed something like this? General thoughts on compatability with a 2nd gen central locking system (I have a fair degree of wiring ability), and whether they are reliable at all?

not sure if insurance company will still cover you as it doesnt have black wiring.

Neither does standard central locking; if they are getting at the wiring they are already in the car, so I don't see how it could void the insurance any more than not having an alarm?
I've never had anything on my insurance that says whether it is alarmed or not.

Thanks for the comment though, shows there's other things that may need to be taken into consideration...

ive done remote central locking on my 2nd gen. it works a treat. It took me total of about 2hrs (over 5days). I wrote up about how to do it. However, it must be noted that it's ONLY remote central locking, not alarm.

I wrote up about how to do it.Thanks, but I want to keep the existing locking system and servos, is much too much of a pain in the **** to strip it all out and replace it with an aftermarket system.

Just want to add a remote "lock/unlock" signal, but not sure how it operates at the moment, and how these cheapies control things. (Haven't studied the central locking schematics very closely yet).

You don't have to pull all the wiring etc out. you can even leave the motors in, all you have to do is unplug them I was going to pull out my whole system, but I just ran the wires that came with the kit. It's dead simple. In fact my receiver unit isn't even screwed in. It sits beneath the TCU behind the dash. I thought, when first looking at it, that it'd be really difficult, but it's mind-bogglingly simple...

What? Most central locking kits i've seen have different coloured wires. I don't see how it matters.

I think he's talking about alarms, so they don't know which wires to cut to deactivate it.

forget that alarm and insurance... the only time this is a problem is if your insurance company states you must have an alarm, with black wiring, fitted to the vehicle otherwise they will not cover it in the event of theft

if there is no mention of an alarm requirment then it doesnt matter if you have an alarm with coloured wiring or no alarm at all... although alarm systems with coloured wiring are not as secure as those with all black wiring its better than no alarm
