Hey guys, quick q about my setup
while im driving, theres a sound coming through the speakers (I know this cos when i turn off the H/U the sound goes).
Its a whirring/whistling sound that increases with my revs and is extremely annoying.
Any Ideas? And how hard is it to fix?

You have what is referred to commonly as interference.
To get rid of it, you need to find out what's causing it.
Only way to do this is a process of elimination, but possible causes could be:
Poor quality RCA/speaker cables
Having RCA cables too close to power wires or grounding wires
Having exposed RCA cables touching bare metal/cars ground.
Gains on your amp are set too high.
The Internal RCA amp on your HU could be faulty or be poor quality.
Something in your amp may have blown recently (one of my RCA input ch's blew the other day on my sub amp, has really bad interference now).
Lots of things to test out. What type of RCA cables are you running?
I'm going to take a wild stab and say it'll either be your gains are set too high, OR your RCA cables are cheap ones.

I see you have a pioneer head unit....
lol
You should of done a search on this, plenty of things on here about noise from the rca track fuse on pioneer head units blowing due to earthing the rcas on the car...

Did you read what i said? Majority of the time if you have this noise through your speakers and your head unit is pioneer that is the problem.

a thousand apologies dude, i was posting at the same time as you, overlap is a biatch.
hmmm myes i shall try the other bits and bobs, theyr cheaper to replace than a head unit im guessing, if not i guess i need a new one/ switch back to stock to sell the car

Is it still under warranty? The warranty starts the moment you buy the head unit. Usually 12 month warranty. Just take it back and tell them what is wrong with it and they will get it repaired. If out of warranty i have no idea how much it will cost you.
If i am right do i still get some beer? lol

but yeh i dont think it was happening until fairly recently

its not because its a pioneer - you have feed back cos they have run both the speaker cables and power wires next to each other. they need to be run on opposite sides to each other. its not interferance persay as in feedback from the wires. you can relay the cables or get these little plastic bits that clip in the wires that are supposed to remove the feedback. i have never used them so i cant tell you how good they are - but they are available from jaycar etc.

I'm guessing that fairly recently you started running amps?

Still so sure its not the head unit?

I think he is referring to a sound suppressor. It gets wired onto the alternator. If the problem is the head unit this will not get rid of the problem. I have tried it.

Pretty much just follow what kmakaz and M4DDOG have said and you'll be able to get rid of the noise.
As kmakaz has said, it's most likely the power wires have been run down together with speaker cables/RCA's causing crosstalk, which is the correct term.
Either that or poor cables altogether. Do you know what gauge cables they used for power when they installed your setup?

If the setup hasn't changed AT ALL, in 2 years, and it's only JUST starting to happen, then i doubt it's the cables unless one of them has been stretched (highly unlikely if it's a quality install).
I'd be looking into the rca track fuse if this is a common problem, otherwise try hooking up a friends amp and checking for noise, or try another head unit. When the sound goes away you'll know what's causing it.

Wait wait, but did He mean He's had the same problem for 2 years and the setup hasn't changed, or that it's a new problem that's just started?
Otherwise yeah, try swapping some hardware cause it might be a fault with some hardware somewhere, or a fuse.

I got the impression that it's been fine for nearly 2 years, and only gone bad recently.
In which case something has to have blown/worn out.

Yeah I agree. I just assumed, because it didn't say anywhere in his previous posts that it's only recently gone wrong, sorry for the mix up. lol

You've got altenator whine. It is induced interference from your cars electrical system. Usually this will be induced by your rca wires (as they are a low level signal and susceptible to this)
It could also be a headunit/amp problem, but first things first:
If you have played around with any wiring recently, this is probably the cause. Unplugged battery, moved a boot install around, played around behind the dash etc.
If this is the case: I would:
Re route the rcas
Check power wires arent running near anything
Make sure your headunit ground and amp grounds are short, and secured firmly to bare metal on the chassis.
If you have:
Increased the gains on your amps - This will cause the noise floor to rise so you will hear more noise - Drop gains down and see if this fixes it
Unplugged RCAs whilst equipment is on (big no-no) - may have damaged your headunit tracks - Warranty job
Otherwise if all else fails narrow the problem down to equipment, unplug the rcas from the back of the headunit is the noise still there? if yes it is in the rcas or the amp. If no it is the headunit (check headunit ground or warranty job)
Unplug it from the amp end, still there? if yes it is from the amp. (check grounds, reduce gains)
Any part of your electrical system can cause these problems. Generally proper installation and planning and using good equipment will stop it. But with the exception of noise gates, most equipment will have a certain level of noise.
