Hi Guys,
I'm doing the trip to Mount Isa from Brissy next month and would just like your opinions on what to do to the car before i leave jsut to make sure it's all in good nick...
What i've got on the cards:
- cv replacement (due anyway)
- major service including fuel and oil filters, timing belt, spark plugs, all fluid replacement, lead replacment etc etc.
- radiator hose replacement
- two new tyres.
Anything else i should be looking at?? the trip is about 2000 km's, and we're doing it over 3 days...
Cheers,
Bonnie

I would only do what you listed if its due for doing in the next 2000 kms. And remember the trip back is the same distance so make that 4000kms, If you havent done an oil change do it. Unless you are due for the rest within 4000kms i wouldnt really bother doing.

I'm sitting at 215,000 and it has yet to have the 200,000km service done- hence holding off and doing it before i go. Oil change is included in the major service (i'll be highly unimpressed if it's not!), so not a worry about that side of it...
It's all overdue- hence doing it.

I would highly suggest then that you get the service done.

In saying this, i still wouldnt bother replacing things that are still in good working order, like hoses and leads etc, if they are still in good working order now, they will still be like that after your trip.

If your gonna do the radiator hoses, naturally flush out the old fluid and replace it. Might aswell do the thermostat and radiator cap also, fairly cheap to do and not hard to do yourself, if done properly should ensure your car dosent overheat on a long trip.
Maybe just your brakes if they are old, good idea to have them checked before a long trip, maybe the tyres if bald. And make sure you have a spare in good condition.
The most common things I hear about on long trips is flat tyre(s) and overheating.

As long as your car has recently been serviced (which you've said it will be) and is otherwise in good order, I couldn't see you having any problems.
~650km a day isn't that grueling on the car. I do Brisbane -> Gladstone often enough, and the car doesn't break a sweat.

I asked the same question when we went to MM06 we came from Tas to QLD about 2,500kms each way we did approx 850-900 km's per day
what i did before leaving
1: Engine mount on drives side ( the washer bottle one)
2: Oil change and Filter
3: Coolant Flush
4: Checked the battery (how old is yours?)
5: LOTS OF MUSIC haha
6: new tyres - how are yours fairing?
7: Prem Petrol all the way
8: Packed lots of water and my toolbox with EVERYTHING
thats all i can think of off the top of my head hope it helps a little bit
Cheers

also, get it done at least a week before you leave. that way if it turns out they have stuffed something up you aren't in the middle of no-where. don't get it done at 3pm 1 day and leave at 7am the next.
also, being 15,000kms overdue for a service isn't a good idea. if you check the oil you may find it is rather on the low side.
