Recently bought a new car. All was well, except that there were shudders between 50 and 60 km/h in the transmission, like something was slipping on something and power was not being transmitted. It also happened in other gears, always in the 1000-1500 rpm range. Out of helplessness took it in for a tranny flush. The oil that came out was almost black  .
So much for regular service books. Swapped in the new oil and now it runs like a dream, power even kicks in at lower revs (previously around 1700 there was all of a sudden urge to go, now its around 1300).

Moral of the story? It NEVER hurts to flush that tranny. If you are experiencing a lazy afternoon and have nothing better to do drop in and get it done. approx 75 minutes. It's worth it!!!

I wish that was the case with our TR, unfortunately not though, it had shudders all over the rev range, but only when warming up. That turned out to be water in a cylinder, which is NOT cheap to fix :(

I wish mine was just the tranny that needed flushing.

Just as a matter of interest does it say anywhere in the service book when and how often you should flush your tranny.
My previous car was a TF Magna which travelled some 140,000 odd kms and as far as I know the transmission oil was never changed.
Now driving a KJ Verada EI with 60,000 kms on it and have it serviced by the book.
So, should I have the transmission flushed or only bother if there is a problem?

the service book doesn't have a schedule for FWD automatic transmission services (at least my TJII one doesn't). it says that the fluid should be checked every 15000km and changed if necessary. I'm about to take mine in for the 75000km service and I'll have the tranny flushed then.

The mechanic that did it for me said hed recommend it be done every 30,000km. The TR/TS required it to be changed that often I think. It's only $200 so if your car does $120,000km you've only spent $800 on your transmission, second most expensive bit after your engine. It's well worth it. The mechanic said hed seen TR trannies go for 300,000km+ with regular flushes, so I think just do it every major service (30,000km). You actually feel the car drive better.

My KJ Verada is getting the 105,000km service done today and i'm getting my mechanic to change the tranny fluid. I bought the car used at 86,000km so i'm not sure if the tranny fluid has ever been changed or not. Either way, the shifts were getting a little bit rough so hopefully flushing out the old tranny fluid and putting in some new stuff should make it good as new.

Haha. In mine the damper clutch or whatever is rubbing on whatever else in the transmission was slipping so I kept getting shudders at low revs, pretty violent ones too. Now its as good as new and I dont get forward jerks any more when gears change up in low revs either, its smooth as. Don't wanna jinx it thought, touch wood.

Btw Mohit mate I'm one of your biggest secret admirers. What I wouldn't give for that KJ of yours bro ... If you ever think about selling mate talk to me.

On another note I have no idea why a TR transmission and transaxle needs 7 litres of oil in it, while a Camry 4 cyl does away with 3.5 litres total. The Camry trans box is also noticeably smaller, like almost half the size of that on the Magna. Damn that Magna tranny's HUGE!

had my tranny serviced yesterday... good thing too. apparently the fluid was in really bad shape (which I kinda knew anyway), and now it shifts sooo much smoother.

so yeah, have your transmission fluid inspected at every service.

This did the trick. The tranny shifts like a champ now. So yeh if your tranny is getting a bit rough first thing to do is a fluid change
